My biggest mistake was ignoring the 1 star reviews, they were right.

I’ve traveled all over Mexico for years, and this is the first time I’ve been scammed.I’ve never written a review like this, but I just can’t believe we fell for it. 😭

Price: $60 dollars PER person. My total for 2 people with a 20% tip was $144 dollars. For those who are not familiar with Mexican prices, that is INSANE for what this is. I am Mexican American and cook often, the ingredients used for our meal could not have been more than $3 USD. I am not exaggerating. The small bowl of fideo soup she served as the second course is what I used to cook when I didn’t have enough until the next payday lol.

Overall the problem isn't that the meal was $60 per person, The problem was that it was $60 dollars for leftovers from her fridge (more on that below). I've been to restaurants in mexico that have been more expensive than this, and those restaurants were worth it.. they were 5 star restaurants. I've also been to restaurants in mexico where my total was $5 USD and the food was better than this.

Also, because I speak Spanish, I heard her talk to her niece when THEY WERE COMING UP WITH WHAT TO CHARGE US, and she was talking about how she charged certain people more depending on where they came from because certain places like Italy don’t tip.

Food: As you can see in the picture the food offering were not even close to what others might have posted. When explaining the food she let us know the tamales were 2 days old,and that the pork chop she just had laying around. Also, when we first got there, she said she only cooked using wood fire, but our whole meal was cooked on a gas stove lol.

Ambience: In another review, someone said that Anthony Bourdain would have loved this restaurant, I’m not gonna lie, that’s what sold me on coming here. I can tell you NO HE WOULD have not. One of the red flags that I should have not ignored was her talking about her passion for cooking, by her body language and avoiding eye contact I could tell she was lying.

The only thing I agree with other reviewers who had a positive experience, was that eating here feels like you’re eating at your aunt's house. If all you really want is to know what it’s like to eat inside a Mexican person's house and are willing to pay $60 per person for that, then this restaurant is perfect for you. There were dogs all over the kitchen, her husband was sitting on the couch watching TV, and everything was pretty dusty. She even made us feel bad for getting her table cover dirty with food.

Honestly there’s so much more I could include in this but the review is already so long.

TL:DR: Tourist trap, overcharges certain nationalities, $60 per person. If you are okay with paying that to eat leftovers to feel what it’s like to eat in a Mexican person's house. This restaurant will be...

This was an experience I wish I could go back in time and just have bailed on the reservation. Ask for the price upfront you will regret it. Like other reviewers I too have traveled through many parts of Mexico and had truly amazing food. The food was good but definitely NOT amazing food very basic and WAY OVERPRICED. For 750 pesos per person, we got guacamole with a tortilla of cheese. Then a squash soup about 1 cup on a coconut husk, the main was a sampling of a poblano stuffed with cheese, rice with a raw banana slice, a couple tablespoon of beans and about 1 oz of pork with mole. To finish as an after thought, Sofia pulled out a dessert from her personal fridge that one of her friends made and literally sliced VERY small slices of this dry days old apple bread. I was hoping for more out of someone supposedly experienced. Maybe some fish or similar considering Loreto is right of the sea of Cortez. I would definitely not recommend this place. Also the vibe my husband and I got after talking with her was a bit scam artist-y. Maybe she is looking for investors for her property that she had pre circled on a map. She was braggadocio and seemed to be trying too hard. As the other reviewers said stay away and spend your money on better places we spent 1500 pesos on basic food...

I fully agree with previous comments stating that this experience is over rated and totally over priced. Sophia is a very nice person for sure. However we had a better experience with incomparable food elsewhere for a lot less. 1/ the overall meal is totally over priced, you end up paying $30 USD per person for something average (clearly not delicious and we did not have alcohol nor did we add anything special) 2/ Pricing truly lacks transparency and I really disliked that - Sophia serves you extras without saying they are not included in the menu and without even asking if you want them (which I find quite dishonest). For example she gave us guacamole (which we thought was an appetizer in the menu) but then charged "extra" $160 for it with no explanation! It was the same for drinks which she gave us without asking first etc. As a result, you end up paying $400 pesos (or 20 dollars) for a "combo menu" (good but not spectacular), which includes a plate, a tiny desert and a soup with rice and hot water + you need to add extras (guacamole, drinks you did not specifically ask for etc.). 3/ I did not like the place as well, lacks charm and...

A must if you’re in Loreto and you enjoy authentic Mexican flavours. Sofia offers a unique culinary experience whereby you are seated in the courtyard of her house surrounded by interesting artefacts and crafts, with Sofia cooking in her amazing open kitchen. There is no menu, she just brings you different courses, all of which are made with love and culinary know-how. Her daughter comes round with freshly prepared margaritas too. Especially when travelling, it was such a treat to have a home cooked meal. We felt totally en casa! Be sure to reserve at least the day before and to arrive hungry on the day. You won’t be left wanting. It’s not cheap but the prices are reflective of the time and effort put into the meal and hospitality.
