Dons tacos and burritos - perfect Mexican authentic streetfood
We finally went to eat some Mexican street food at an excellent street food restaurant in Cancun - Dons Tacos and Burritos.
Unfortunately, during our entire stay in Mexico, we never tried the classic and world-famous local dish - tacos. Initially, it may seem simple, but layer by layer, all the ingredients, add up to an explosive, bright and rich taste.
On the first run, we ordered two servings of tacos Al pastor (with pieces of pork and pineapple) and tacos con pollo (with pieces of chicken). On the top was a mix of pico de gallo (tomatoes, white onions, cilantro). All this I poured lime juice and generously flavored with hot sauces with Habanero peppers (I madly love the taste of these peppers). All these tacos were very tasty and with a rich flavor!
But then was more cool! On the second run we ordered tacos carnitas (with slow-cooked pork - very tender and sprawling) and tacos cochinita (pork in the Yucatecan style, I don't understand exactly what it is, but very tasty). I liked the previous ones, but these tacos turned out to be even tastier. Tender, tasty pork goes very well with these tacos. On the top, of course, I added lime juice and a lot of habanero sauce. Multiple layers of flavor are constructed and mixed together in one dish: tender pork, tomatoes, onions, cilantro, lime juice and spicy habanero sauces - Incredible taste!!!
We also tasted tacos with fried avocado (Avocado frito) - very interesting, for me it tastes like fried potatoes. This kind of tacos I liked too.
From drinks we ordered 2 Mexican lager beers and Mezcal 400 Conejos Reposado (from Tlacolula, Oxaca). Exactly this type of mezcal (with a very-very smoky taste) that we really like, unlike mezcal with a caterpillar (con gusano). After we bought a bottle of that from a nearby store to take home.
Before we left, we went back here again to taste these incredible tacos. So, the price is not very cheap, but not expensive either, but there is incredibly delicious Mexican street food - I recommend it 100%.
There is a large selection of various spicy and non-spicy sauces here. My favorites with habanero peppers (* and **)
P.s. We were here around 3:00 pm on a weekday, and there were...
Read moreIt was our first time in Cancun. Beautiful place filled with all smiling faces. No wonder they call the Yucatan peninsula the Caribbean Riviera. But what we realized that town grew to cater to tourists especially coming from United States (Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse or worst yet, McDonald’s, really!). As a person who travels only to experience the local culture, food, and its people so, I immediately dismissed the steakhouse and the hamburger chain! They were not even an option, however, the so called “Hotel Row” is filled with those Italian, Japanese, American, etc. restaurants that are soooooo boring when you are Cancun, Mexico! You know. Anyway, my search yielded this place being the most authentic and laid back. Simplicity and casualty is a key when it comes to picking a local food. Well, Don’s Tacos & Burritos is that place. Albeit being a “hole in the wall”, this place is nothing more than they claim to be; small shop front-street side seating where they serve you direct from the kitchen window. Choices are not many but the combinations are endless if you got the appetite. Both local beer and the food are reasonably priced and they fill you up plenty. What I would like to highlight are the homemade basket full of several different sauce bottles. My heaven, trying to try every flavor could simply make you end up trying every food on the menu! Hot, Sweet, Mixed, all rated by stars of spiciness is just so awesome, I just have to recommend the place to all of you out there to have that open mind and see what a local flavor can add to your already great vacation in this paradise called Cancun....
Read moreI went here today to try their tacos, and I got a margarita too. Their tacos are the absolute best I've ever had, and the margarita was great too. Not the cheapest place, but I think for a hotel zone, the prices are fair. You will find cheaper if you go outside the hotel zone, but I'm not complaining because I just wanted easy-to-access, authentic Mexican food. They accept USD, Pesos, Visa, Mastercard, so it's convenient. The staff are incredibly friendly, as soon as I got to this place for the first time, the staff welcomed me immediately, sat me down, gave me a menu, brought over sauces, then left me peacefully to eat - A very nice experience. I really like the artwork they have done on their walls, very nice to look at. I like being able to bus here quickly from my hotel and back with little effort. I will definitely be coming back here, and I recommend them to anyone wanting to try authentic Mexican cuisine. The staff are very happy and seem to enjoy working there, I saw a smile on everyone's face. Nothing I can think of to complain about, they had about 10+ different sauces to choose from and I tried a few different ones. I wish we had this exact restaurant up in Canada where I live. The staff speak good English, so if you don't know Spanish like me - You will...
