6 years ago my wife and I took a wrong turn with the golf cart but decided to see where the road led anyway. Eventually we reached a dead end and saw the tiny sandwich board beckoning us to La Palapa del Capitan; which at that time was nothing more than a couple of plastic tables, two rope swings attached to a tiny bar, and a restroom you literally had to walk through the living room of the cute couple who owns it to use. We proceeded to enjoy not only the best guacamole and mojitos on the island, but some of the best we've ever had period.
We always swore to each other that whenever we ended up back on the island this would be a must stop, and we made good on that promise to each other this Easter weekend. It was refreshing to see that they have clearly been doing good, as they have built it up a little without thankfully losing its hidden gem charm. Only a few tables and a palapa have been added, as well as an upgraded restroom detached from the main tiny building. The guac and mojitos still rocked our world, as well as fish tacos which were easily the best I've ever had in the Mexican Caribbean.
All of it was served by the same kind and jovial family, still doing their thing and serving up some of the best food and drinks you could ever hope to find on the island. Trust me, this breezy relaxed island atmosphere is now impossible to find anywhere else on Isla Mujeres. Take the wrong turn up the wrong road to find the right hidden beach shack you never knew you were looking for....
Read moreWhat a hidden gem literally at the end of the road. Glad I was able to find this spot, completely off the beaten path of Isla and gave it a try. The reviews are right - it’s seriously good, homemade food from gracious hosts.
Chose your seat, order your meal - we had the fish and shrimp with butter and garlic and this was finger licking good. The guacamole was good but needed some salt. My spicy margarita was spiced to the “t” and oh so delicious. I would definitely visit this place again. We enjoyed the entertainment of the blue crabs. An amazing value and chill experience for $30 USD.

Read moreIsla Mujeres' best kept secret. This is run by a wonderful husband & wife couple that are churning out a small menu of strong flavors. The guac was the best my wife and I had tasted on the island. Many people shy away from this place because of the shady looking location (tourists! bah!) but the food and friends you'll find there more than make up for it. You'll also see actual crabs walking around like they own the place! Just a wonderful...
