Really wonderful ice cream store or gelateria as they say in Italian. Owner/operator is from Verona Italy (I guess that's where the store's name comes from...Romeo and Juliet being the famous star crossed lovers from Verona. (my school boy Shakespeare is a little shaky) and replicates flavors and recipes using "old world" methods one block from Chapala's malecon. He has settled here having started a family in Mexico. He also incorporates some tropical fruits not often found in Italy. There are about two dozen flavors of gelato. You can buy by the scoop in a cup or cone. I had a chocolate cone with one generous scoop which set me back 20 pesos. God knows what the same item would cost in Italy. The gelateria makes decision making very hard as I would take any of the flavors. Which one? They give you a small taste but how does that help? They're all good. If you like gelato, try this...
Read moreI was disappointed in my experience at Romeo y Julieta. A vegetarian dish of vegetables was ordered, and twice the vegetables were delivered with cheese. You would think these days, servers and chefs would know that cheese is not acceptable for a vegano. Ultimately, a plate of zucchini noodles was ordered, which was ok. I ordered the 5 cheese tortellini, with s meat sauce, which was ok. Nothing special, but ok. Bread was delivered twice with no butter, so I asked for butter, which seemed to be an unusual request. Most Italian restaurants would give you a plate of olive oil with balsamic vinegar and spices to dip the bread, which was a cheap dry white bread. I ordered the house red wine which I liked. Perhaps I just ordered the wrong items, as I know the restaurant is highly rated. I saw a pizza at another table that looked very good. The restaurant had very few customers, but the...
Read moreMy wife and I had dinner with friends Friday night at Romeo y Julieta and we were very pleasantly surprised. We’ve been here almost a year and had almost given up on finding great Italian food. But Romeo y Julieta was a revelation. Everything from the beverages to the desserts was truly great. The Cesar salad was exceptional, the pasta dishes, made with fresh homemade pasta were all fabulous and the desserts (tiramisu and real gelato) were first class. We sat at an outside table which was nice. The place was full this night so I suggest reservations. This is the new Ajijic location they moved to while the streets outside their Chapala location were being redone. I sincerely hope they keep this location since it’s walkable from my home and I plan to...
