Merida is pretty much a wasteland for decent Asian food. There is a "yucatecan-ized" version of Chinese take-out that is ubiquitous, but it's long on meat (pork or chicken), short on veggies, and often in heavy (often sweet-and-sour -- a.k.a. "agridulce" -- my least-favorite) sauces. However, amazingly, a new place opened recently just north of La Mejorada park, calling itself "Spicy China" (appealing to tourists, obviously, but a bit off the beaten path) and serving a comparatively small menu of Chinese and Thai offerings. And, as we discovered tonight, they're actually good -- you know, not brilliant like you'd find in a major American or Canadian city with a significant Asian population, but really flavorful! The portions serve two people handily (we were told that in advance), so we ordered Thai green curry with chicken and a couple of small spring rolls as starters. The waiter, Daniel, is a Merida native, but he speaks fluent English and has lived in a number of different places including Asian countries and Toronto Canada, working as both an athlete (field hockey) and as a chef. So we had a fascinating conversation with him about how Merida has changed, world politics, etc. La cuenta (the bill) was less than $20, including flavored bubble teas (a first for both of us, provincials that we are). Highly...
Read moreMy wife and I had passed by this place a few times during our morning walks, and after seeing all the buzz in some of the local Facebook groups, we decided to give it a try.
We arrived around 7 PM on a Wednesday evening and were the only customers at first, but a few other diners showed up shortly after. The restaurant was clean and well-lit, making for a nice first impression. We were quickly given menus and, after a few minutes, decided to order pork dumplings, chicken in Szechuan sauce, and sweet and sour pork, along with mango drinks.
The dumplings arrived fairly quickly, but we weren’t given chopsticks. After our waiter disappeared, we had to track him down to request some. The dumplings themselves were pretty good, especially when paired with the spicy chili oil provided on the table.
Shortly after, our other dishes arrived along with bowls of sticky rice. The sweet and sour pork was essentially deep-fried pieces of pork with a sweet and sour sauce—it was okay but nothing special. The Szechuan chicken had good flavor but was quite dry and lacked the sauce we were expecting.
Overall, the meal was just okay, but we’d be willing to return and try other dishes.
Prices were reasonable—$585 MXN for the two of us before tip—and we had plenty of leftovers, which they...
