Please be wary of this place - they tried to scam us by saying my card had been “declined”. I don’t know why it has such good reviews. The whole time I was there, the waiters would keep staring at me and my friend, making us feel very uncomfortable. The food really was probably the worst taco I’ve had in Mexico - very dry and greasy. And it’s not cheap either. To top it off - they tried to scam me. I wanted to pay with card. However, the waiter took a long time to type things into the card machine and had to “reset” it a second time after I’d already added a tip and he basically asked for a higher tip (??). The payment was then “declined”. However, I had not had any issues with this card before and I just had a bad feeling, given the vibe of the waiters. He wanted me to tap again - however I insisted on paying in cash after that. He was then whispering with his colleagues and staring at us. It was really quite disconcerting. I then checked my bank account later when I had service and the money had indeed left my account. It’s a good job I trusted my instinct and didn’t tap multiple times! This place clearly is a tourist trap and will prey on young women that they deem to be vulnerable and naive. Definitely avoid here. The only good thing about this place was the setting in the patio. However, the ambience was completely destroyed by the creepy staring of the staff and then...
Read moreWhere to start? I insisted on visiting this place because of the Netflix thing and the good reviews, but it was quite disappointing.
The service was really bad, it was slow, the waiter took our drinks order and just left half way through getting the order, he came back 10min later, took the rest of the order and we ordered food too, since it seemed like a slow service. He kindly asked if we wanted the starters first or all at once, we went for Sopa de Lima as a starter and then the rest.
When food arrived it was a mess, some people got their main first than the soup, some others the soup but nobody got cutlery to eat! We asked for it and they took like 5min only to deliver it with their hands, no napkins or anything with it.
For the mains we had to remind the waiter and he just delivered our order to a another table, which seemed odd as they just had order and only 2 people ate and the rest waited like 15min for their food. We told the waiter that he might had given our food away by mistake and he said that was not the case, food finally arrived 10min later and it was nothing special. There are better options in Mérida, more tasteful and with nicer service.
Sopa de Lima was okay, but in short it was one of those times were the TV makes it look amazing and it...
Read moreRude and unprofessional servers that immediately point temperature guns at your head before greeting with a hello or giving you any advanced notice. Every other restaurant I've been to in Merida takes the temperature on the hand or wrist. When my friend explained this (she was too far to get the gun pointed at her head like I did with no warning), the wait staff explained that it must be on the head. We asked what the temperature difference is on the hand and they said half a degree, so we said ok if our temperature is x, then it's impossible for the temperature on our head to be y (simple math). Rather than using their brains and simple math, they robotically insisted only on the head as a government rule. So why hasn't the government closed the 99.9% of restaurants that use the wrist or hand with common sense (again, from simple math)? The robotic nature of the staff (rather than common sense) put this place at the bottom of all establishments I've been to across Mexico. Go to Chaya Maya. Their Yucatecan food is spectacular and the ambience and energy is calm, relaxing, and beautiful rather than tense, stressful,...
