We stayed near Cantina La Llorona and walked past it several times during our trip. Almost every time, it was packed with people who seemed to be enjoying their food and the overall experience. The atmosphere was inviting—the entrance covered in vines, an appealing patio with fantastic tables, and a striking central bar. On the last night of our stay, without prior reservations elsewhere, we decided to give it a try. Unfortunately, that turned out to be a mistake.

Despite having a reservation, we arrived to find the restaurant mostly empty. We were seated right away, but then waited over 10 minutes before our server even approached us. During that time, we saw other patrons come in, get seated, and then leave before even having their orders taken—clearly frustrated by the ridiculous wait just to order drinks. By the time our server finally showed up, we were ready to order drinks, appetizers, and our main dish, but we opted to start with just drinks and appetizers—a decision we later regretted.

Our drinks came quickly, followed shortly by the black shrimp aguachile, but then… nothing. We waited nearly an hour for a simple mandarin salad. When we asked about it, the server assured us it was coming “very soon.” Another 15 minutes later, it finally arrived—oddly accompanied by hollandaise sauce (which made no sense). Concerned about the timing, we placed our order for the main course while waiting for the salad, worried it would take just as long.

After experiencing some of the incredible dining options in CDMX, this meal was underwhelming at best. The food was acceptable but not worth the wait. In hindsight, we wish we had spent our last night seeking out another excellent restaurant instead of settling for Cantina La Llorona just because it was close...

Do not eat here!!! We had a really disappointing experience here on so many levels. 1 - Our order wasn’t taken properly (only one tuna instead of two) - so I waited to eat mine until the second tuna came out. We didn’t get an apology for the mix up. 2 - The food was soooo salty and we couldn’t eat much of it so they offered to replace it, which we didn’t want, as our mouths were numb from salt. This should have been taken it off the bill but wasn’t. 3 - Then when we went to pay I didn’t select tip on the machine and it was a different amount from the bill! So then when I questioned it the waiter said it automatically charges 15% and nothing could be done. I already had wanted to not tip but was going to offer 10% to be kind. Now after reading other people’s reviews I can see this is done regularly with tips of various levels added. This is really really unacceptable behaviour and left a really horrible impression.

The drinks were yum and there was a nice band but really do not go here for the food. It will be a waste...

We went when there were almost no other restaurants open. The restaurant was clearly a tourist trap but we needed a place to stop. While we were there, it was nice. The music and atmosphere was fun and the food was good, but at the end we got stiffed on the bill. They tried to overcharge us for our guacamole order and the SUPER over charged us for our drinks saying that we had margaritas and Palomas with Don Julio when we NEVER ordered that. Even when I brought that up that we didn’t say anything about Don Julio and wanted the cheapest tequila (and that they didn’t tell us it was Don Julio) with the staff, they were like “that’s what you got so too bad”. They specifically don’t put margaritas and Palomas on the menu so they can upcharge you. If you go here, pay attention to what you’re ordering and the prices, check against the menu, and don’t order anything that doesn’t have a specific price against it or specify EXACTLY what you want or they’ll use it to take advantage of you. Keep an eye out if...

Cantina La Llorona in Mexico City is a must-visit for anyone seeking a unique and unforgettable experience. The standout for us was their incredible cannabis-infused mezcal—smooth, flavorful, and perfectly balanced with subtle herbal notes, making each sip truly special. And the food? Absolutely amazing! Every dish was bursting with flavor, beautifully presented, and paired perfectly with the creative drinks. Beyond the fantastic food and cocktails, the cantina has a vibrant yet laid-back vibe, with friendly staff who make you feel right at home. Whether you’re a mezcal lover or just looking to try something new, this place is a true gem. We can’t wait to come back!

Service was quick, friendly, and informative about the menu. I got the Don Huevo burger, and it was SO GOOD. (I'm going to start adding arugula and fried eggs when I make burgers at home!) Also got the strawberry horchata (in the pictures) since it was one of the only non-alcoholic options, and it was divine. The flavor was great and it was so creamy. The only thing I wasn't a huge fan of was the TV was on with the volume kind of loud the whole time, the music was a little too loud, and the lights were synchronized with the music, so it was a little overstimulating.
