Jazzatlán Capital — Restaurant in Mexico City

Jazzatlan is very cute jazz bar on 2 levels, the downstairs which is a cramped little stage and cozy bar and then upstairs which has a proper jazz stage and decent piano. The music is generally good, but there are some problems: 1. It was way too hot and crowded and LOUD in the downstairs space. There was no airflow and was stifling; 2. The music started a full hour after the announced start time; 3. The cocktails are very pricey by US standards. Tonight my simple cocktail was $15 + tip USD! An under-poured glass of ordinary wine is $13 + tip.

All of that is tolerable if the jazz is good, but the musicians were way over amped and it was piercing our ears to sit in the small space. As a jazz musician myself, I can tell you that their audio tech didn't appear to know what he was doing as he was setting up mikes at 8:50 and the jazz show start time was 8. They left the house music on while the musicians were trying to tune their instruments. And when they finally played, it was impossibly loud and simply did not need to be so for such a small space. And it was poorly equalized leaving out the midrange.

The music is good but the service kind of sucked, when we arrive the hostess told us is a concert at 10 and we have to pay cover in cash so we did but she took us to the second floor where it was very empty but still it took 50 minutes to get our food and other 8 minutes after the food came to get our drinks, the hostess was kind of rude very pushy she looked mad when we ask her for a table on the back and no right next to the scenario, in the time we was there she move people to different tables because she seated them in the “wrong” table. Also we order something the never came but when we tried to pay the check it was on it so we have to talk with the waitress about how he never bring it and ask him to correct the check the also took 25 minutes to get, the concert started almost one hour later and while waiting for it the ambience wasn’t the greatest.
