We were VERY disappointed by our experience here and would NEVER eat here again. It was six of us who dined here for a special birthday this past Friday night. When we walked in, the restaurant only had 3 tables seated, which is very rare for a Friday night, especially at a sought after restaurant in Mexico City. From start-to-finish, the service was not great, definitely not what you'd expect from a fine dining restaurant. We've eaten at Pujol, and we cannot even begin to understand why anyone would put Raíz in the same category for food or service. As mentioned, there were only 3 other tables seated, and we've had better, more attentive service at casual restaurants in Mexico City. We started with ordering drinks, 2 of us ordered lychee martinis, only to be told that they were out of lychees. We then ordered a nice bottle of sparkling wine, only to be told that it wasn't chilled and they needed to chill it for 15 minutes. It was still served to us too warm! As we had read from previous reviews, 4 of us chose the 9-course tasting menu. This was a big mistake as it was NOT good! Most of it did not make sense, was underwhelming, and the flavors did not go well together. When we were ordering, we asked if the tasting menu included beef (since 2 of us don't eat beef). We were told it did, and that it would be removed for 2 of us, however still included for the other 2 people that enjoy beef. They never got a course with beef, they kept the tasting menu the same for all 4 of us. Also as a previous review mentioned, 1 of the courses is a single oyster accompanied by a clam mixture on the side. The oyster was NOT fresh. As it turns out, half of our group got very sick in the middle of the night. We aren't entirely sure it was the oyster, or something else entirely, however we all suffered from painful stomach issues more than 24 hours later. There are so many lovely restaurants in Mexico City, we simply cannot recommend Raíz. It was a splurge for our group to eat here and we left incredibly disappointed (and ill). It's very strange, it is as if the previous reviews didn't match the restaurant we went to! We did contact the restaurant to let them know about our experience and how half of us became ill after dining there. They responded inviting 2 of us to come in and dine again to make up for the terrible experience. Unfortunately we can't accept their offer as none of us want to return...
Read moreI really loved our dinner at Raiz, and it’s a place I’d highly recommend to anyone looking for a memorable dining experience. From the moment we walked in, the ambience of the restaurant set the tone for the evening. The interior had a warm, inviting feel with just the right level of lighting to make it intimate without being too dim. The music was well-curated and perfectly complemented the overall vibe—relaxing yet energetic enough to keep the mood lively.
We opted for the 9-course tasting menu, which felt thoughtfully priced given the exceptional quality and creativity of the dishes. Each course was beautifully presented, showcasing the chef’s attention to detail and flair for innovation.
Out of the nine courses, several dishes stood out as exceptional. The pork belly was a standout, cooked to perfection with a crispy exterior and a tender, flavorful interior. The parsnips were surprisingly delightful, highlighting how a humble vegetable can be transformed into something extraordinary. And then there was the flan—a dessert that left a lasting impression. Creamy, smooth, and perfectly balanced in sweetness, it was honestly one of the best desserts I’ve had in a long time. It was the perfect way to end the meal and left me wishing I could have another serving!
Overall, Raiz delivered not just a meal but an experience. The staff were attentive and knowledgeable, enhancing the enjoyment of the evening with their thoughtful service. I can’t wait to go back and try more of what they...
Read moreNot what we expected. We were hoping for a fine dining experience in Mexico City and this was not that. There were a few key etiquette issues we noticed right off the bat. Not a huge deal and could have been overlooked if the food was outstanding. But that was not the case. They continuously would mix up our food. They brought me the completely wrong dish. Again, I could understand why - we were English speakers - maybe it was a language thing. Except I pointed to what I wanted. I would have ate the wrong dish but my friend took one bite and said it was the worst short rib she had ever tasted. The meat was dry and the mole tasted like BBQ sauce. They made me feel bad for ordering the wrong item then told me it would take 10 minutes to make the right item. That was not the case. Try like 20 min and then the steak was cooked rare instead of medium. My friend ordered the grilled asparagus with Hollandaise sauce, but it tasted nothing like a Hollandaise sauce. The entire restaurant was empty, not a good sign for 7:30pm on a Saturday night. I was warned by a local chef to not visit here and I really regret not taking his advice. Would have rather ate street tacos then eat here. Only giving them 2 stars because their tacos were tasty and the staff was attentive. But only because we were the only ones there. Oh, and they comped my meal which is great, but it was a very painful process. This restaurant does not deserve 4.5...
