Karen’s Place — Restaurant in Nayarit

This waterfront restaurant and bar offers an inviting atmosphere that truly shines, even if the food didn’t quite live up to my expectations. The setting is absolutely fantastic—dining right by the water with stunning views creates an ambiance that’s hard to beat. Whether it’s during the day with sparkling sunlight reflecting off the waves or at night with the twinkling lights, the location makes the experience feel special and relaxing.

The service here is truly top notch. The staff were attentive, friendly, and knowledgeable without being overbearing, making us feel welcome from the moment we arrived. It’s clear they take pride in delivering a great guest experience, which really adds to the overall enjoyment.

That said, the food was the one area where the experience fell a bit short. While the menu offered a decent selection, the dishes themselves were just okay—flavors could have been bolder and presentations more polished. It wasn’t bad by any means, but it lacked the creativity or seasoning that would have made the meal stand out.

The place was great at first. We visited twice as it was my mates birthday. We went as a big group the first night and the Mexican staff were great and the food was very good. We decided that we would return for the birthday celebration and it was just a group of four this time. All was going well and Karen herself came to say happy birthday to my mate. To me it was a big deal to meet the owner. I tried to say hello to Karen but after three attempts calling her, by name, to get her attention I felt put off by her. She would talk and make eye contact to the rest of the group which were white, but wouldn't give me the time of day. Maybe it was because I am black... I will never know, but the way she made me feel, I was ready to leave the establishment. Others noticed the behavior as well. And funny enough, I was the one paying the tab, lol... Besides that experience all would have been quite likable. Fat Boys has a similar set up and the food is better with a much friendlier vibe. Shame on you Karen... you're in a country of different races and you bring the racism...

Interesting pool area paths wind through to arrive at Karen's Place restaurant, which has nice ocean views, the food (more tailored to gringo tourists than the locals) is fairly good with entree options you'd find in most hotels in the states.

Hostess was a bit snippy since we arrived 15 minutes to closing and scowled at us the kitchen was to close soon, so we best hurry with our meal.

In lieu of going elsewhere we ignored her attitude and cheerfully sat down to order our drinks.

Our waiter was very accommodating which made up for our sourpuss hostess and we enjoyed the rest of our meal.

I had the "pollo parmesan pollo parmesan" which was a tasty battered dish and the wife had the fish special of the day which came with a yummy couscous. We both had mojitos for drinks (would have stayed longer for another round if not for feeling rushed) all in all just over 500 pesos.

I'd return again, Karen's Place was always good before, maybe they were just having an off night -- it happens to the best of us -- and perhaps prices higher during low season to compensate for the lower...
