La No. 20 — Restaurant in Playa del Carmen

We rather stumbled across this gem as it’s upstairs with little by way of signage to get you to notice it. But boy...are we glad we did!

We were seated along the rail with a great view of 5th Avenue. We were then greeted by our friend (yes, I’m going to call him ‘our friend’ rather than ‘our server’) who immediately made us feel at home. Gabriel was likely the nicest man in all of Playa Del Carmen. He graciously took our meal requests after walking us through the menu and pausing to describe in a bit more detail the local favorites.

We started with a couple cervezas, had the house made guacamole with fried crickets as an appetizer and then we were blown away by our main courses. The Mayan Pork tacos and Soft Shelled Crab tacos. Wow, just wow! They were served along with a generous serving of different hot sauces ranging from rather mild (but with big flavor) to very hot (but still with amazing flavor).

All the while, Gabriel continued to care for us attentively while also being careful not to dominate the evening with too many visits to the table. It was quite evident he’s been doing this for quite a while.

We ended with the cornbread dessert and then just sat there marveling at just how wonderful our night was and just how lucky we were to have stumbled upon La No. 20, and mostly to have...

I hate leaving negative reviews but we need to always be honest for anyone looking to go here.

My friend who had been staying with me for past month in Playa was leaving to go home to England. We decided to treat him to a nice meal out before he left the next day.

Because of the live music which this place has, we decided to here. We arrived at 9pm and the band was already playing. After all of our drinks arrived (mine was a Bloody Mary) I asked 3 different waiters for pepper which had been left out of the drink.

Once of first course arrived, we noticed all the music was turned off and then the worst part of the night. Football/soccer was put on to every TV and blasted through every speaker. It was so loud we could barely hear each other talk. We spoke to the manager and asked why this was on in such a restaurant (not a sports bar) he told us that they had advertised it would be on but when he showed us the website and Facebook page, it was on neither of them.

Not a single table was watching it and even then they still declined not only to turn it off but even turn it down. It ruined the atmosphere of the place and ruined our night. We left early and went for food somewhere else.

I hope for anyone who does decide to eat here doesn’t have the same...

Decidimos hacer un recorrido por la 5a. Avenida de Playa del Carmen, aproximadamente a las 5:00 p.m. nos dio hambre y de todas las opciones decidimos ir a La No. 20, llevo años visitando la cadena y siempre nos han atendido en un nivel más que sobresaliente, especialmente en la que está en Andres Bello, aprovecho para felicitar a su equipo especialmente a Angélica Tena.

Y que empieza el calvario, nos tocó la suerte que éramos la única mesa del lugar, había aproximadamente unos 10 meseros y el gerente (que luego cuando pedimos hablar con el nos dijeron que no estaba y la segunda vez que pedí hablar con el estaba ocupado, saludos señor ocupado, pedimos una mesa para 9 personas y nos atendió una amable joven cita que no recuerdo su nombre, pedimos de tomar y la cerveza NO estaba fría y eso que estuvo toda la noche en el refrigerador, les puedo decir que un vino tinto salido de la cava estaba más fresco que la cerveza al grado que pedimos una cubeta con hielo para poner las cervezas a enfriar.

He visto este efecto en muchos lugares, lugares vacíos mal servicio, llenos y la gente se vuelve eficiente, tenían PROBLEMAS DE SERVICIO, enormes, eramos la única mesa y no nos atendían bien, la comida tardo mucho, pedimos un vaso de agua y estando al lado de la barra y no habiendo otra mesa en el lugar se tardaron 8 minutos en traerla, pedimos que si el fideo seco lo podrían hacer con caldo lo cual accedieron pero después de una eternidad para prepararlo llegaron con un plato normal, le pedimos un plato hondo y se tardaron 15 minutos contados porque iban a calentar el caldo, teníamos que estar pidiendo nuestra comida, llegamos a solicitar que mejor nos atendiera una sola persona porque no había coordinación.

Se nota la falta de trabajo del gerente o capitanes, el lugar tenía muchos detalles de mantenimiento (dense una vuelta por los baños), ocupan tener presupuesto para tener meseros mejor capacitados, el promedio de edad del mesero era 20 años parecía Chilis, y no tengo problemas por la edad pero si por el nivel de servicio, no les vendrían mal unos uniformes se ven gastados y los chavos no sabes bien ponerse una corbata.

En cuanto a los alimentos tenían un muy buen sabor, en general nos gustó todo, los postres si hay mucho trabajo por hacer, ya entrada la noche empezó a tocar un grupo que realmente tenía a todo el restaurante con muy buen ambiente, en esto tienen un 100, estaba lleno.

Pedí Ron y me ofrecieron lo habitual, Bacardi, Zacapa, etc., le pregunte a la mesera si tenia algo mejor y me dijo que tenia Santa Teresa (Ron Venezolano) y se acordó porque un artista cuando iba lo pedía, Ron que en lo personal al me gusta mucho, pero el trago a $400 cada uno se me hizo muy alto considerando que la botella vale $1,000 aproximadamente.

Le presumo a toda la gente que conozco la experiencia de conocer La No. 20 pero esta vez nos pasó todo lo contrario, el día de hoy intente reservar a ver si nos atendían distinto y toda la familia se negó a ir.

La relación precio/beneficio es media en esta sucursal, el cheque promedio aún con los rones carisimos fue de $900 pesos por persona.
