Honestly, I first glance we had a great experience here. Our first time we were waited on by Mimi and she seemed great at the end of the night. We paid our bill on card and we selected the tip option but long behold when we got home the next morning, and we checked our statement. It was only processed for the amount of the bill, we felt so guilty that we walked back and handed her a 20% tip in cash and apologized. Well, let me tell you we were met with pure attitude an eye roll and not even an acknowledgment after our apology. We had planned to stay and eat dinner. We ordered two drinks and let’s just say Mimi‘s attitude was so off putting. We decided not to stay for dinner and to be quite honest, we will never come back. The fact we came back less than two days later with apologies and a very good cash tip we feel as though we didn’t deserve this attitude and trust me when we say the service she provided the first time was so bubbly and so bright the difference was astronomical. Mimi you need to check yourself and realize things happen.

Edited… here yourself!? Funny I didn’t see Peter there at all! lol you’re right we came back and Eduardo served us because Mimi didn’t even bother with any words afterwards not even a thank you. Eduardo was amazing but we still chose not to stay because of her lack of customer service after the fact so please don’t even try to dismiss this clear of customer relations after the fact: You’re proving my point! Mimi who was all about I and our kid stayed away she hid inside. This isn’t with the experiences we’ve had at the old location and this new one prior. Make whatever excuse you want you are unbelievable and beyond...

My wife and I spent almost two months in playa del Carmen. We normally cooked for ourselves, but found ourselves eating at the Freaky Tiki many times.

Over our stay, we had many different items on the menu and the food was consistently good at a fair price. The atmosphere is relaxed, and has indoor and outdoor seating with a good mix of canned music that is not too loud. (American music.) They have live music in the evenings, I think, Thursday - Sunday after 6PM.

The burger is good and they have a daily special before 5PM that includes fries and a beer for 150 pesos... which is a little over $8 US. (They will substitute the beer for a soda or bottled water.) Note: I normally like my burger a pink medium, but I learned that I had to order well done... anything else, it came out rare to medium rare. Well done burgers were still very good and juicy.

My wife and I also recommend the burrito, the fish tacos, fajitas, and the fish and chips.

We do not speak Spanish, but had no problems here. They have English menus and most of the wait staff also spoke English.

Please note that it is not a 5 star restaurant with linen napkins and table cloths... MY 5 star review is because it is over all a nice casual place to eat that won't...

*1/5 stars - Disappointing Experience in every way

I'm writing this review as a warning to others: avoid Freaky Tiki at all costs. Our experience was marred by unprofessional management and waitstaff. The manager, always wearing black glasses, seemed more interested in speaking negatively about customers behind their backs than providing good service.

The waitresses were unfriendly and made racist comments about Canadian and American customers. What's worse, they treated a kind and hardworking Canadian waiter poorly, forcing him to quit. This lack of respect for staff and customers is unacceptable.

The owner appears to be more interested in drinking than managing the restaurant, resulting in inconsistent food quality. However, the live bands are a highlight.

Overall, Freaky Tiki has the worst service and management in Playa. Unless things change, I'd advise others to look elsewhere for a pleasant...

First and last time :-( We noticed an error on our bill and politely inquired with the waitress if the price was correct. She responded rudely, insisting there was no mistake. However, when my friend retrieved the menu and showed her that the Burrito should have been priced at 165 pesos, not 215, she became even more hostile. When I attempted to capture a photo of the bill alongside the menu, the waitress became visibly upset and forcefully took the bill from my hand. Later, a guy came back with the corrected bill, the waitress was standing a little bit behind with her arm cross and clearly very angry and he was really aggressive... This unsettling encounter left us feeling unsafe, despite our 25-year history of visiting Playa del Carmen every year. This happen on March 1, 2024. I regret to say that I cannot recommend this restaurant.

I went and ordered a vegetarian burrito. The description mentioned all burritos would include rice, beans, cheese, sour cream, peppers and lettuce. My first burrito showed up with mushrooms in it - I'm allergic to mushrooms and no where on the menu did it say there were mushrooms. The waitress argued that it did say it on the menu but I checked again (photo attached) and it does not say mushrooms. She very nicely did ask the kitchen to remake my burrito however when it came out a 2nd time, it was only the tortilla and a mix of random vegetables! No beans, no rice, no cheese, no sour cream. Just carrots, broccoli, cauliflower and peppers (photo attached). I am not vegan and the burrito did not say vegan. It said vegetarian which just means no meat. I was insanely disgusted with my food and barely ate. I do not recommend at all.
