This was one of the most disappointing meals I think we’ve ever had - both because of the food and the wait staff. This place has so much potential, but too much attitude and not enough flavour.
We were really excited to see such a great range of options that were all vegan, and we ordered a mix of things to share - with plans to get more depending on our hunger levels.
The waiter was constantly huffing and sighing as if to complain about being over-worked, and seemed like he didn’t want to be there. We arrived happy and excited but we quickly felt like a burden to him.
Unfortunately, the food here is incredibly bland - even the peanut sauce served with the Vietnam Rolls, which is such a hard thing to mess up! They also soaked the rice paper too long so it became soggy, and didn’t roll the veggies tight enough… it just fell apart.
We also ordered the taco sampler, and the tacos seriously lacked so much flavour that they were some of the worst veggie tacos we’ve had in Mexico (no exaggeration).
We never got checked on during our meal, but we did try to flag down the waiter as we wanted to order more drinks - and get a new bottle of hot sauce as the one he brought was actually empty. But we sat unattended for so long on either side of our meal that we felt unwelcome.
When he finally came to collect the dishes and check on us, the whole experience made us admit that we actually didn’t quite enjoy the food, to which he became super defensive and suggested that we must be used to eating very salty foods if we didn’t enjoy (?!).
After chatting very briefly, I asked why vegan restaurants don’t use beans in their menu more often (genuinely curious) - and he hopped on his high horse again to make a sweeping assumption that we think beans should be served everywhere only because we’re in Mexico?!? 😂
I dropped the conversation once I realized his narrow mindedness and condescending attitude wasn’t going to change. We didn’t want to continue being judged by a random stranger.
I would like to remind him that while salt IS delicious (and not unhealthy as he tried to imply), there are plenty of other foods that offer beautiful flavour: garlic, onion, and lime - to name a few. The peanut sauce alone had so much potential but fell short because it was seemingly diluted with water.
And yes: beans. Obviously they’re a popular ingredient in Mexico, but beans do in fact exist in plenty of other countries — and there are so many different types of beans and endless possibilities for preparing them. Having beans in one of the tacos - or alongside them - would have added depth and complexity to the dish along with proteins, fibres, fats, minerals and vitamins that are so essential for vegan diets. For him to suggest I was stereotyping is simply a window into his mind alone.
Open your mind to the possibility that your customers have experience with vegan diets, and might be trained chefs and nutritionists ourselves… but mostly, believe that we have taste buds that...
Read moreWhile strolling through the charming town of Puerto Morelos, I stumbled upon a quaint gem of a restaurant that immediately piqued my curiosity - "Veggie Veggie." As a conscientious eater, I often struggle to maintain a healthy diet while on vacation, so I wasted no time in stepping inside. To my delight, I was welcomed by a warm smile from the Veggie Veggie team.
I decided to order their "Baja" dish, which consisted of cauliflower dipped in a tantalising Tempura batter, served within soft Tacos. I couldn't resist and ended up savouring three of these delectable creations, making a satisfying meal out of it. Their smoothies, I must add, are nothing short of fantastic. Everything on the menu is crafted to order, ensuring utmost freshness.
This hidden treasure unquestionably ranks among the tastiest restaurants I've had the pleasure of dining in. The meticulous use of fresh, locally-sourced vegetables and fruits truly shines through in every dish. I wholeheartedly recommend Veggie Veggie to fellow traveler's seeking an exceptional vegan or vegetarian dining experience. In fact, I was so enamoured by this place that I dined here three days in a row. If you're in search of a top-notch plant-based eatery, make sure to pay a visit to the dedicated team at...
Read moreBeing the only 100% vegan place in Puerto Morelos, I've been to this restaurant a few times now. The first time years ago, I was impressed the second time was terrible...
The smallest guacamole I've seen with hardly any chips. The service was terrible and seemed like we were doing them a disservice just by being there. The food was mediocre at best.
The last and most recent time, I wanted to give it another shot to see if it was just a bad day. Unfortunately not. The menu has a lot of options although they were out of many. Perhaps if the menu isn't so extensive, they could put more effort and quality into the items they do serve.
We ordered taco pibil (dry, couldn't distinguish the flavor) , shawarma falafel (lacking sauce, plain), babaganoush, and spring rolls (literally tasted like dough and or 3 tiny rolls it was 115 pesos which felt like a rip off). It was the most tasteless food I think I've tried. I hate giving all vegan restaurants low scores because we truly need more of them, but this place is very disappointing. The one saving grace was the ceviche tostada that was actually flavourful. I wish all the food had notable flavors like that.
I really hope the business sees these comments and makes some improvements so we can go back to...
