Hacienda Montejo is a fast food restaurant located in the food courts of the Cancun and Merida International Airports. I was looking for decent airport food while waiting for my flight back to the United States from Cancun (after a relaxing stay at the @joiabyiberostar Paraíso). What I found was a surprisingly delicious eatery providing tourists with the final flavors of the Yucatán.
The colors and textures of the eatery are intended to remind tourists as much of the warmth and coziness of a hacienda as one can get from a food stall in an airport.
Hacienda serves breakfast in addition to lunch and dinner specialties. This is not an eatery to enjoy if your plane is about to board—there was a fifteen-minute wait before the food was ready.
I ordered the: Cochinita Tacos (Yucatán-style barbecued pork with pickled red onion) Lime Soup (chicken broth, sofrito, sour lime) Agua de Chaya (leafy perennial shrub native to the peninsula)
Everything tasted fresh, well-seasoned, and delicious. I am already planning a trip to the area this year. Usually someone who doesn’t like to wait long at the airport, I will definitely make time to experience the panuchos, salbutes, and Motuleño-style eggs. It’s rare that one is excited to eat...
Read moreGot soo sick after eating here. Digestive track hasn’t been right for more than four days now. I had huitlacoche street tacos at market 23 and so much other street food and more (traditional ‘Mayan’ breakfast everyday, seafood, lengua, etc.) every day while I was in Cancun and felt great. That to say, this has nothing to do with a weak stomach trying a Mexican dish for the first time or anything to this effect. My other half that’s been to 10 Latin American countries and eats street food in every one of them also got sick here (and she never gets sick from food). It was the only thing I ate the day I left around lunch time. Whatever bacteria was on the bad meat, hasn’t left me feeling the same since. Other comments share a similar experience. These guys could probably use a pop in from COFEPRIS or FDA equivalent for safe...
Read morePeople don't realize that this place will give them their last chance to taste authentic Yucatecan cuisine. The rest of the food court is actually what they already have back home.
Try the "Botanero Yucateco" or Yucatecan Sampler, Panuchos and Sopa de Lima for a basic but delightful taste of the peninsula.
If you want to look like a local building your own tacos or "taqueando" get Lechón and Longaniza de Valladolid, don't forget to squeeze some drops of sour orange on top of your taco.
Your hands will get messy but your palate and your soul will thank you for a year, or at least for the time before you get back to...
