THE PLACE TO EAT
So, I've looked at a lot of reviews in the area (Tulum, not Coba) and the top review is invariably something like "this is the best __ I've had in Tulum" - this has not necessarily helped me decide, and generally disappointed me when the food turned out to be a bit above average.
Understand that I'm not trying to set you up for the same sad outcome. None of the food I've had in Tulum (beach or pueblo) could match La Casa de Los Gorditos. Not even close. This is a restaurant I would be thrilled to have back home.
The Poc Chuc was fantastic, and the Cochinito Pibil was pretty good, too. Guys, as they served us our drinks one of the chefs came out to the front and sat down in front of a wood fire and started hand making tortillas for us. Simply delicious. They kept bringing more. I kept eating them with the meals. Fresh tortillas are a weakness.
We had spent all our cash earlier that day and needed some for the ruins. Not only does La Casa de Los Gorditos accept credit cards, they went the extra mile and let us charge a bit extra for cash back because there are no ATMs in the town. I'm not suggesting you all take advantage of that kindness, but that's the level of generosity and true hospitality we felt dining there.
Did I mention it's really cute there? Definitely girlfriend approved.
The only minor downside was they had just one type of beer, Amstel Ultra. It honestly wasn't terrible, but surprising that of all the Mexican brands of cerveza, all they had was a Dutch diet beer. Luckily they also have cold coca cola in the bottle, and seriously good lemonade (amongst other options).
If you're going to/near Coba, just go....
Read moreVery delicious, very fresh, very beautiful decor and setting, and very kind people! If you have your own transportation and are heading to Cobá, definitely stop here for food before you go all the way into town. It's the perfect place to start your day. Every tiny detail of the food is prepared completely fresh and perfectly. The handmade tortillas were absolutely the best I've ever had in my life and anywhere else in Mexico (I've been traveling through Yucatán and QR for over a month, so this is saying something.) I arrived at Los Gorditos at least an hour before opening time (by accident), but the very kind people there invited me in and served me an incredible breakfast anyway. I had the huevos con verduras, which I highly recommend (the veggies were perfect), coffee, and also the agua de piña con chaya, which is also delicious and very refreshing! If you happen to be staying in town, like I am, it's a nice mid-morning walk or a quick bike ride up to Los Gorditos. You will be very, very glad...
Read moreFantastic! Best food in all of Quinta Roo! If you're a gordito like me, it's worth the trip to Coba just to eat here! Best poc chuc we had on the peninsula! Do yourself a favor and order the guacamole. So good we had to order more. And the service was first class from this unassuming roadside restaurant. Yet once you step under the low hanging palapa, the atmosphere is just what you're looking for if you want an authentic Mexican experience. The friendly bilingual staff and knowledgeable masero clearly take pride in the authenticity of their Mayan culture and cooking style. We were even greeted to a quick tour of the handmade cooking method over a wood fired comal, which clearly makes all the difference. Please make the time to come here and experience this place, unlike any other on the planet! Take it from me, El Gringo Ultimo and add La Casa de los Gorditos to your itinerary, foodies; you...
