We arrived by cruise ship to Puerto Costa Maya without a booked excursion or much of a plan. The littlest ones in our group (5 and 7 years old) were tired of all the schedules and shuffling. They just wanted to play on a beach. Luna’s Restaurant was EXACTLY what we needed.
At the port my sister-in-law and I rented a golf cart for the day, put the littles in the back and took off towards the beaches. Eduardo at the golf carts suggested we go to Luna’s and ask for Manny. To get to Luna’s you go past all the other beach clubs that everybody talks about. It takes maybe 15 minutes. The kids were thrilled with all the scenery from the back of the golf cart! To them it was like an amusement ride!
At Luna’s Manny was right there to greet us. We were able to park right on the beach and choose any tables and chairs we wanted. Plenty of space, plenty of shade (under palapas or under palm trees, plenty of beach! We played on free kayaks, paddle boards, and hung on hammocks all day. Manny even fetched beach toys for the kids to build a sand castle.
The food was a highlight for me. We ordered ceviche, guacamole, tacos, and quesadillas as well as fettuccine for our one eater who only eats pasta. Everything was a huge portion, fresh as can be and delicious. We also had beers, mojitos, milkshakes and jamaica agua fresca. Isaac our waiter also kindly opened two coconuts that we brought from the port so we could eat the insides.
Other big bonuses included clean bathrooms, freshwater showers, and only one solicitation trying to sell us jewelry while we were enjoying the beach. Manny even called the golf carts company when it seemed ours would not release the brakes while we were departing (we ended up figuring it out in the end). We did not take advantage of the option to get massages while there but you certainly can!
There was some seaweed on the beach, but that was true of every single club along Mahahual that day. There was a gentleman removing it manually while we were there, but we were also not terribly bothered by it.
Go to LUNA’s, ask for MANNY if you want a chill, quiet, easy day in...
Read moreWe visited Luna's in mid-July and had a wonderful time. We were a group of three, and we were in Costa Maya as one of our cruise ports. We took a taxi from the port to Luna's for $5/person and quickly settled into our beach chairs under provided umbrellas. Since July is the off-season, we didn't make reservations ahead, and that ended up being just fine; except for one other family, we had the beach to ourselves!
We ordered fish tacos, guacamole, and ceviche and everything was fresh and delicious. The ceviche was especially outstanding! There are plenty of tables under palapas for dining.
The servers were attentive without being at all pushy, and only 2 vendors walked through trying to sell us their wares.
We didn't use them, but there were kayaks and paddle boards available for guests to use.
All in all it was a relaxing day on the beach, which was exactly what we were looking for. The bartender called for a taxi for us when we were ready to head back to the port, and it arrived within minutes.
One note, July is a rough month for sargassum, and while the beach was certainly swimable and not completely overtaken by it, we didn't spend a ton of time in the water--just long enough to get wet, cool off, and head back to our chairs for reading,...
Read moreWhen you first get into Costa Maya, you are flooded with shops and vendors trying to sell you something. Nobody wants to have a vacation spent like that, and Luna‘s Restaurant and Bar is the perfect answer. You take a taxi to a location few miles away from the port that you docked at, and get dropped off at the restaurant. I recommend getting the all you could drink and eat package, which for only US$61 is a good deal. They have authentic Mexican food, and one of the best tasting salsas that I’ve had. There are no vendors there, and it is limited to about 30 tourists, meaning that you will have a relaxing and quiet stay. The drinks are good, and they have all sorts of entrées including some vegetarian options. They are aware of allergies, and when you book an advance, they will take that into account and serve you accordingly. (I strongly recommend making a reservation as you were then guaranteed a spot.) They have a nice beach area with lots of shade and the option to also have a free kayack to paddle around in. While the service did get slower as the day progressed and more people came, I would say that it was a very positive experience and I would recommend Luna’s if you are vacationing in Costa Maya.
