VI.AI.PI Cantina — Restaurant in Quintana Roo

5 stars all around!!! I highly recommend this place! None of the staff would usually recommend this and I don’t know why. Sure there’s these other reservation places that serves pretty food but they are not hot food that’s made fresh. What you get there are pre made food and they assemble as you order so it’s not the most hot or fresh. Here you get fresh and hot food! The most amazing catch of the day seared so nicely on top of corn salsa and the fish is so fresh and soft and not dried at all. The octopus was so large and so tender! The chef who made it really made it so well and it wasn’t salty! The menu option is limited than the others but they’re all local cuisines that they do so well! Sure there’s grasshoppers and such that may freak you out but half the world’s eating it so stop making a scene. It’s also something that’s really sustainable and yummy. Moving on- at night they have amazing live music and the round nature of the building makes every seat a winner. It’s intimate and very cool vibe. It’s also not busy when we were there so we got spoiled with extra nice service and extra nice food. I loved it so much that I was tempted to cancel my Tah Xido reservation so I could come back again. This places was the most memorable of all 6 places I tried...

The best meals and drinks we had our entire stay at Xcaret Arte, including Xaak. We love Oaxacan food so VI.AI.PI was perfect for us. And it's a beautiful restaurant with a towering bar of tequila and mezcal. They made me the most delicious spicy mezcal paloma (tajin rim) on our first night and it became my staple drink for the stay. We piled melted quisillo cheese, mushrooms and Oaxacan spicy sausage on warm tortillas, ate crispy tostadas with guacamole, chili powder, grasshoppers, chicatana ants and maguey worms and follow up with barbacoa tacos and short rib with amarillito mole. After eating at the other restaurants I wish we had come back for more meals...

La única razón por la que no le doy una estrella al lugar es porque las bebidas están ricas y porque la señorita de recepción fue bastante amable, pero en general, la experiencia en este restaurante fue muy decepcionante.

Mi amiga y yo fuimos dos veces. La primera, el servicio era muy lento así que solo ordenamos cócteles y optamos por comer en otro lado. Decidimos darle otra oportunidad al lugar al día siguiente, creyendo que el problema con el servicio era la cantidad de gente, pero cuando volvimos el lugar estaba casi vacío y el servicio era igual de lento.

Tardaron media hora (o más) por plato. Al parecer los tacos fueron calentados en microondas. Tacos que, por cierto, eran bastante desabridos (la carne no estaba mal, el problema fue el sazón), sirvieron acompañados de papas fritas tipo "chips" (lo que desentona con el plato) y no fueron acompañados de ninguna salsa.

Las memelitas estaban bien, pero la tlayuda dejó mucho que desear. No sabía mal, pero la tortilla y la presentación y el sazón se alejan completamente del concepto de la tlayuda original de Oaxaca, lo que sería comprensible si se tratara de un restaurante en el extranjero. Pero, estando en México, no hay excusas para distorsionar (y quitarle calidad) al platillo. Especialmente considerando que llegan muchos extranjeros al hotel y esta es la imagen que se les ofrece de comida mexicana.

Finalmente, un guacamole y una bebida que ordene NUNCA llegaron. Lo de la bebida en particular me molestó mucho, porque el barista no estaba haciendo nada.
