Olas altas — Restaurant in San Miguel de Allende

Not sure if the reviewer who wanted BBQ was at the same restaurant we were. Our experience was lovely. A kind server and a chef working in plain view delivered excellent, perfectly grilled fish and a rich guacamole. Cold beers were cold. Off the street but easy to find, the outdoor, covered "dining room" is bare bones with basic wooden tables on a crushed stone floor. Styled after a beach shack with a surf boards leaned up against a wall, this place is as close to street food as you can get, but with the amenities of tables and chairs and a full kitchen. Local folk come and go. It's clean and very reasonably priced... Wonderfully, it's not an overpriced ex-pat hangout of which central San Miguel is saturated with. Just good food and...

Awful, just awful. Horrible service, bbq is not bbq, globs of cheese dripped on 'bbq' shrimp, extremely salty sauce that doesn't even resemble bbq sauce, shrimp burger was supposed to be 'bbq' and was overly breaded & fried, the bun was soggy and fell apart, asked for ice water received lukewarm water, no attention given to diners (and we were the only two people eating there) loud awful music. Fantastic. This little restaurant is hidden away from view on the street. It does Mazatlan-style seafood and it does it exceedingly well. Our server Felipe was over-the-top good. He was delighted that we welcomed him to practice his English with us.
