Let me preface this by saying I have not had any other American barbecue in Mazatlán or Mexico as a whole, so if the practices here are typical of murican BBQ here I'll update my review accordingly.
Rub BBQ was a nice departure from a lot of other nearby offerings, serving a variety of smoked BBQ. When we ate there it was quite lively, with a pleasant din throughout our time there, with a primarily younger looking crowd. This establishment is partnered with a local microbrewery, Bichola, which I think is a great move and I hope their collaboration continues.
I ordered the smoked alitas (although I received chicken legs, which isn't a bad thing by any stretch, it just left me slightly confused at the time. More on this shortly), from which you can choose from 5 or so sauces of differing flavors and spice levels. I ordered the 'Spicy BBQ' which is supposed to be one of the spiciest. I was disappointed that it really didn't deliver much heat at all. Next time I go back I'll be sure to ask for extra spice. The drumsticks themselves were smoked well and tasted really good! My main gripes with this place are primarily with their preparation decisions.
My partner ordered ribs, which arrived boneless(!!!) and my chicken legs were lollipopped. Both of these decisions show to me that the restaurant cares about delivering a good product to consumers, but both decisions seemed quite questionable to me. I understand why you'd want to serve a cleaner looking chicken leg, but I dislike this trend. I would much prefer to be given legs intact. Part of the enjoyment of BBQ is the tactile experience of eating your food off the bone.
All this being said (whew!) I will likely be back when needing a taste of home, overall I enjoyed my...
Read moreMe and family are visiting Mazatlan and we decided to visit this place in the night. It was empty. The staff were just hanging around and now I know why.
The food is American style BBQ and it wasn't very good, it's very average and expensive.
To top off the horrible experience, when getting ready to pay there was an uncomfortable conversation that took place about tip. We left a tip and they start bickering.
So yeah. There's a reason this place was empty last night. Diner beware. I only gave them two stars because the lady that helped us was nice enough...
