We visited Tangier from Canada in Sept 2022 and was preparing for this trip since July. I wanted to eat the best Paella in the city. After lots of research, I found El Tangerino. Everything looked great and I told my wife we should go there with her family who lives in Morocco. So we went on a Friday after Friday prayers - me, my wife, my 15 month old son and my father and mother in law. The plan was to go there and then my wife's friend and her husband were going to join us. The minute we got in the front door, we were told that my father and mother in law would have to change there clothes as traditional Moroccan clothes were not allowed in the restaurant! I was taken aback and completely shocked. My father in law and I had just come from Friday prayer and he was wearing a thawb and my mother in law was wearing a jelaba - these are both common clothing in Morocco - especially on Fridays. Eventually they let us in without having to change the clothes, but I told my wife that I did not want to dine here because of their discrimination, so we left and went to the restaurant next door where our friends eventually joined us.
I am horrified that a restaurant - especially one that is in Morocco - would have such discriminatory policies. Every person - regardless of what they wear - should be able to dine at any restaurant and should not be turned away. And like I said, the restaurant is in Morocco so how can they have such flagrant policies against the country they are in!
I myself work in international business and have been involved in the building and selling of a large food and beverage institution and I know that a basic principle is to always make the customer happy. This place did no such thing.
It is true - I did not dine at this place, so cant comment on the food. But that is because I had such a horrible experience in the first minute, that I didn't get to.
But I am happy to say we went to Il Ristorante Di Mare right next door and had an amazing meal with wonderful customer service. I gave them 5 stars!
I wanted to give El Tangerino 0 stars, but you need to give a minimum of 1 to post. But my real rating is 0 stars.
I will never ever come back to El Tangerino and will tell my friends, clients and any other relevant party to...
Read moreFirst time we went there in 2017 when we stayed in Tangier for a week. About 4pm, there were nearly no customers. We ordered a paella for two for about 130dh. And it was not too good. My wife said it was worse than what she could make. Then we wanted to taste some tapas and this restaurant was nearby so we decided to give it another try. About 3pm, there were some customers, particularly a group of Portuguese near us. So we ordered a couple tapas and they were pretty good. The atmosphere was mode lively by the Portuguese group. Probably due to that, the waiter gave each a paella as tapas for free. It tasted better than our paella the first time. So the second time was a good experience for us.
We paid a visit a few days ago, after about 5 years. At 3pm, there were quite many people. There are no more paper menus. One scans a QR code to see the menu online. Prices are up substantially. The previous paella costs about 250dh and tapas around 90dh. Again we don't have confidence with the paella so we looked to get a couple tapas. Although there are about 10 tapas on the menu but essentially they are some same kinds with only the change of materials (shrimp, calamari etc.). We got tapas of a shrimp and a mushroom, plus a tortilla. They tasted pretty good. When asked if we would get a tapas for free, the waitress didn't know what we were...
Read moreFew weeks ago, I had a dinner at the bar table with a friend near the window. the food was good, a little bet pricey but delicious. The ambiance was good. But the service/server was HORRiBLE!. The server was coming to our table with a very bad attitude, serving our drinks from the side, not checking at us, ….then disappeared for the rest of the night. If I want to describe his service that night I can go ahead and write pages and pages!!! Just very bad! we were looking for him to order drinks and few more appetizers, then we decided to ask another server for what we need who btw was awesome, doing his job with a smile and positive vibes. At the end, we asked for the bill, and guess what, he finally showed up and asked us how we gonna pay? Instead of answering his question, I told him (straight to his face) how bad and horrible his service was. And he needed a lot of improvements, how come a restaurant like Tangerino tolerates this. I paid with my CC. And I told him he didn’t deserve the tip that was already included in the bill. In the other hand I tipped well the other server who took good care of us, and told him how great he was. In my way out i gave the feed back to the young lady (the manager). Tangerino, I’m not going back, I’m not gonna recommended to friends and family. They’re a lot of places around to...
