Read moreDuring my recent visit to Kathmandu, my friends and I had the pleasure of having food at MTR 1924, a restaurant renowned for its authentic South Indian food. The experience was truly exceptional.
The Mini Tiffin was a mouth-watering combination of five classic South Indian dishes - Masala Dosa, Idli, Vada, Upma, and Kesaribath - each prepared with authenticity and served with sambar and two types of chutneys.
A standout dish for me was the Bisibelebath, which surpassed even those I have tasted at other MTR locations in India. Rich, flavorful, and perfectly-spiced, it had a touch of traditional home-style cooking. The filter coffee was aromatic, served in classic steel cups that brought a sense of nostalgia.
An added highlight was the interaction with Chef Dharmaraj, who visited our table after the meal to enquire about our experience. Such personal attention is rare and greatly appreciated. The open kitchen concept is another commendable feature - it allows customers to observe the food preparation process and witness the commitment of the team to cleanliness and hygiene.

Every bite was a delight, starting with the Ragi Dosa – crispy yet soft with the earthy taste of finger millet, paired perfectly with that on-point coconut chutney. The Rawa Dosa followed, with its lacy, golden crispiness that crumbled beautifully, adding a subtle nuttiness to the meal.
Then came the Masala Dosa, a classic, loaded with perfectly spiced potato filling, complemented by the tangy chutneys and sambar that had just the right balance of heat and flavor. I couldn't resist trying the Chole Bhature, and let me tell you, the fluffy, golden bhature with a side of flavorful, spicy chickpeas was an absolute treat.
Lastly, the Khara Bhath, bursting with spices and fresh vegetables, was a savory finish to the meal. The chutneys, particularly the coconut one, were the standout, adding an extra layer of flavor that elevated each dish.
Overall, it was an explosion of authentic South Indian flavors with that unmistakable comfort factor. Definitely a place that’ll make you feel like you’re on a food trip...
