Nice and crowded (but not too crowded) in the night time, chill and relaxed in the daytime (people bring their children even - nice, tasty, simple snacks and soups available for part of the day as well)

Super friendly bar staff (that know how to run a bar, so don't try nothin' funny ;))

Sweet location (borderline Jordaan / Westerpark area - close to Haarlemmerplein)

And an everchanging interior in the back with board games (that you are free to use) and quality books about Amsterdam, punk rock, and countless classic novels (that you are free to read)

It's a hidden gem in central Amsterdam that some locals are only just starting to be aware of.

Far from a "tourist trap" - this is one of the places that tourists (AND locals)...

I'd been coming to this bar for 10 years until last night. Until then, it was my absolute favourite. But last night I was harassed, threatened, and pushed twice by a woman in the toilet. As a woman myself, I complained to the staff, who at first told me they would talk to her and ensure I was safe. But then whatever she told them, they let her go and told me because she was leaving, it was all fine. I was so disappointed at the staff's behaviour. It is not at all the feminist place it claims to be. It is not a safe place. Outside, I saw her again, and she threatened and harrassed me again, saying I was "lucky". In addition, earlier that evening my girl friend and I were repeatedly harassed by a man inside the bar. All in all, a horrible evening after 10 years going there every few weeks....

Came here yesterday evening and absolutely loved this bar. Vaasjes are only €3.50 and they have Weihenstephaner as their house beer which is very refreshing and novel in Amsterdam! The atmosphere was relaxed and welcoming. Staff were incredibly friendly and the size of the venue allows for large groups and gatherings. They have some strange murals that look vaguely phallic all over the place - an interesting choice for sure! I will definitely be back soon to try the other beers they have on tap and hopefully to see some live music or comedy. Huge thank you to the Checkpoint...
