Hotel Il Fiore ||I saved up for a year to take my mom on a European tour: started in Madrid, Lisbon, London, and now Amsterdam. All has been going excellently and I was happy to be going back home later this week to tell the tales of how I and my mom, Black women, have been treated with great respect. That was going to be my narrative until all went to hell in a hand basket at Hotel Il Fiore. ||We checked in yesterday, had a cup of tea, and quickly went out to sightsee. We returned at night, had a great conversation with the night manager for about 30 minutes downstairs and returned to our room. It was at this point that I decided to go into the bathroom to take a shower and first noticed there wasn’t any soap. I called down, and the night manager said the hand soap was the bath soap. This was weird to me. I went into the shower, and then noticed the moldy caulk, so I asked the night manager to please come upstairs. ||It was at this point that I knew I had to do a better job of checking the room. The hand dryer was FILTHY!!! The bed had stains on it and hairs as well. At this time, the manager came up and offered us some bar soap and an offer to change the sheets. He said yes the bathroom was moldy but that had to be replaced but there was nothing he could do about it. I immediately asked for a new room and he said they were all booked. I started calling around and found a room, thankfully, at Ambassade Hotel. I had to drag my 74 year old mom through the cold in her night gown to a new hotel. I showed the pictures to the hotel staff at Ambassade and to the Uber driver who took us there, and everyone was apologetic. ||This morning, I called back to the Hotel, and Kathryn was RUDE!!! She said my standards were too high because no one else had complained about the hotel. The reviews online are excellent but I guarantee that if all your rooms looked like ours, your...

Read moreI stayed with Hotel Il Fiore in December with my girlfriend and we really enjoyed our stay. ||The hotel was very clean and surprisingly modern inside (the outside is quite deceiving). The room was perfect for the two of us to have a sound sleep and some down time after a couple of days of walking from place to place. ||However, the best part about the hotel was the manager who greeted us upon arrival. He (apologies I can’t recall a name) was very polite and welcoming and made a real effort to make booking in as smooth as possible. He sat us down in reception and gave us a map which he proceeded to use to advise us on all the best spots in Amsterdam (he knew all the prices and the best times to go and even had discount coupons behind his desk which he was happy to give us). His knowledge of the city and all the sights made it a lot easier for us to plan out our time there. They provide a selection of tea and coffee in the rooms as well as a mini-fridge stocked with cans of pop and refillable water containers, very useful when we had forgotten to find a shop for supplies after a long day of sightseeing. He also came to our room and presented us with a bottle of champagne and 2 glasses when he found out we were there to celebrate my 21st birthday - a very nice touch which we were very grateful for. ||Unfortunately, we didn’t get chance to dine at their restaurant as we had already booked meals elsewhere prior to the holiday but if the restaurant and the service there is anything like the hotel, I imagine we would have enjoyed it very much. ||Amsterdam is a wonderful city to visit and we will certainly be returning again and if I had to choose one thing to recommend to anyone it would definitely be the Heineken...
