I just had one of the best meals, ever! The ambience of the space, the pride shown by the service staff, and the love put into preparing the food by kitchen brigade. Cafe Modern, Amsterdam is located in Amsterdam Noord on Meidoornweg. They serve food that is as local and seasonal as possible. With set menus of 5, 6, or 7 courses each meal is a surprise for the guests based on the produce of the day. For my visit I enjoyed the following dishes, all full of fragrance and flavour. Tomatoes with Wim, tomatillo salsa, smoked kelp ice cream.l Smoked mussels, onions, umami del mar, fennel & mussel mayo, verbena, fennel ice cream Chioggia beetroot roasted in salt, lava, koji beurre blanc, black walnut ketchup Pork belly, leek, mayonnaise, pickled zapalito Blueberry, lilac ice cream, goats curd, plum, almond crumble, marigold oil

Surprise meal not such a good surprise. The so-called ceviche was not marinated in citrus juice but was totally raw fish, combination with white strawberries and cucumber unappetizing. The bottarga on the tomatoes could not be seen or tasted. The beets were nothing more than that and boring. Loved the monkfish with 3 kinds of fresh beans but it was a tiny portion. My friend ordered cheese but it was served without bread, when she asked for it got 2 crackers. No wines per glass on the menu, you had to name some and they see if there are open bottles, very strange, and their way of forcing you to order a bottle. Price not worth what it costs, around €75 per person you'd expect more and better.

Café Modern is located in an old monumental banking building. A lot of the original authenticity is still visible and displayed such as old vaults and lockers. The ambiance of the restaurant is simple yet cozy. All the personnel is very friendly and helpful. They offer a 5, 6 or 7 course dinner. Personally, I prefer a la carte, however I knew this was the concept when we made reservations. Make sure to make reservations well ahead especially at the end of the week and weekends. I liked the experience, however, prices are on the high side and portions are quite small.

The hotel offers no cleaning services throughout my lengthy four day stay. First two day no central heating was running. Therefore kindly Emily provided me with small heaters. The room has a massive raw chicken picture placed on top of the bed. Which we kind placed in a safe position away from our sight. The manager reported this to the police as damaging the property. A joke right. No milk with the tea bags. Dim room with one light working. All the clocks there have no batteries. Literally only three sockets in the room. A lot of draft in both rooms. Shower box shabby, and allows water to somehow release water. ||||Now comes the really important details. The hotel is two floors up. The front door has a dodgy lock which takes forever to open. The manager didn’t even greet us in the first day. Then someone cooks stinky stuff in the kitchen. The thing is when you are in Amsterdam, the smell of cigarettes and other stuff is inevitable. However the hotel manager is a sniffer dog, and then charges into our room after check out time which is at 11:00 super early. Then before we could even come back with my medication from the shop, he calls a dozen if police to the property to simply just exert dominance, or racism. Let’s be real there are far worse incidents and actual crime to be dealing with and not petty hotel managers complains. I think it was completely unnecessary considering the manager hadn’t even spoken to us at all. To that point I didn’t even know what he had looked like. ||||What’s worse he then charges us for being late which I understand even though we completely clean hoovered and removed all the bedsheets from the room. It seems to me this man simply made his own laws up. Now where in my booking confirmation did I sign up for cleaning before I left. Not even air bnb does that service. If a cleaner was in the room he would have to have around 40 pounds. How did he have the cheek to ask for more money. Because he was racist. Furthermore this manager then charged us for refunding another man money. It seems to me that there is a ring/bias link between Amsterdam police and racist hotel managers. We are all humans who fall sick. And yes we can clean our own sick, however any other hotel offers to clean up such mess. He had a plunger and hid that from us till after the police left. What kind of human does that to tourist who come to their county first time. All evidence points to one thing. Skin colour! ||||I would never recommend this...
