Kooi Coffeeshop — Restaurant in Amsterdam

This is the best coffeeshop in Rembrandtplein area - the decor is stunning and unique, the coffee is delicious and the music is always spot on here.. old school r&b and rap, chillout trip hop, lots of lovely vocals... There is a choice of seating, comfy slouchy with cushions or more upright if you want...We always sit right in the window and watch the pigeons, trams or the people going into the Our House exhibition at Air opposite :) We have always been made to feel super welcome on every visit, the owner is a cool dude who feeds the birds outside the shop which we always enjoy watching, they hop straight up on the windowsill which is very cute. Not to mention great choice of menu and 10/10 products we giggled from Rokin to Red Light and beyond......

Although we did go late at night, this was the first coffee shop we visited in Amsterdam and it was an intimidating and unpleasant experience. The staff member abruptly told us we couldn't sit in, which was fine, but then barked at us for specific change and when we didn't immediately understand what he was saying he became very annoyed and rudely took the money out my hand. The staff member looked like he just wanted to close up for the night, which is fair enough, but people were still sitting in the coffee shop when we entered and we left feeling like we'd thoroughly annoyed him and we were put off by the whole concept of coffee shops. Although Kooi was only two doors away from our hotel, we chose to not go there again for the rest...

Kooi had very cool decor and was welcoming initially as a coffee shop. We purchased some hash and were told we were also required to purchase one drink per person to offset the costs. The workers were a bit standoffish and cold but not unfriendly. The bathroom was not very clean and I could almost not open the sliding door when I approached it. I even turned on my cell phone light to make sure I was really trying to get in to the correct room because the light inside was not on (it was an automatic light). Overall, this was a mediocre experience compared to other coffee shops in Amsterdam but the decor and theme were fun and...
