La Vallade — Restaurant in Amsterdam

Fantastic restaurant. Went with four friends and was treated like a King. Had the five-course "mystery" menu. Just asked if we can't eat something. The waiter was enthusiastic, exciting and very attractive - which helps! He explained each meal very carefully as well as the wine. He reminds me of my attorney.

I thought the food was incredible and we had a special "guest chef" that night. So I am not sure if they swap in and out chefs weekly but the meal was lekker. The portions were big for European standards but not too big. The wine was very good as well. They were very generous with the bread on the table....with lekker olive oil and butter.

Odd thing I found about the place is the big shaker of salt on the tables. Right off the supermarket shelf. I would think that if you're confident of the way the food is prepared, salt would not be recommended or needed, but this is a big-boy thing of salt.

HUGE space in West Amsterdam. Near an old dyke and canal. It must really rock in the summer time with that outdoor location. I will be going back for sure.

Excellent food and service — just beware of the outdoor smoking if you're sensitive

We had a wonderful dining experience overall. The food was exquisite — one of those rare meals that feels simple yet deeply thoughtful, easily justifying the price. The service matched the food: warm, attentive, and unfussy.

Why not five stars? Unfortunately, indoor seating wasn’t available, so we had to sit outside in 35°C heat. What made it difficult wasn’t just the heat, but the heavy cigar and cigarette smoke drifting over from nearby guests. I have an existing lung condition caused by exposure to second-hand smoke, so this made the experience physically uncomfortable.

If you’re someone who enjoys a fully “French” outdoor atmosphere — smoke and all — you might not mind. But if you're sensitive to smoke or have respiratory concerns, it may be worth waiting for cooler weather when indoor seating...

We love La Vallade. It's our neighbourhood cafe just steps from our front door. The menu changes nearly every day and that the space feels homey and charming. We also love that there aren't any choices you have to make and that the place is really focused on sustainability and seasonality. We went on Sunday, and they were trying out their vegan-only menu for the first time. It was FANTASTIC. We are neither vegans nor vegetarians, so didn't go specifically for the vegan menu. If the staff hadn't told us the menu was vegan, I wouldn't have believed them. Everything was so delicious, flavourful and you still got the signature "butter" fullness of French cuisine.
