It’s a well know fact that the Dutch love to track to France “en masse” for le vakantie au camping. When they do, they’re also know for being many decibels louder than many French chason singer and completely oblivious to the beauty of French cuisine, rather bringing their own bammetjes and jars of peanut butter in lieu of French baguette and cacahouete.

Why this long winded intro to the depravity of Dutch holiday culture for a review about a French bakery you say?

Mais oh lalala — it is all an elaborate set up to emphasize how good the bread at the “bakery of Seb” really is.

Because while the Dutch refuse to buy baguette in France, they will queu around the corner in Amsterdam Zuid for croissants, brioche, flutes and whatever that chocolate version of a gingermanbread is that they sell.

Perhaps it has something to do with the price, as all the pastries and tarts and breads are surprisingly affordable. If you’re lucky you’ll even be served by one of the French bakers who won’t shy away from correcting your pronunciation.

My only concern is that the locations of the bakeries might as well be in the South of France in comparison to where many people live in Amsterdam but if you’re willing to make the track tu ne regrette rien!

Ps. Please consider selling small French salted butter with the jams, for those wanting to picnic...

I went there on Thursday around 10:30, a queue had been there. Waited for 15-20 minutes. It’s acceptable, but it would be better if ordered online in advance. Fortunately, the waiting is worthwhile, they hold high standard as always. One good place for bread, baguette, pastry lovers!

A kind reminder, if you want to have galettes des rois, order online. Please refer to the poster on the glass wall of the bakery.

Finally, I want to share my personal story with you: This is my second year in Amsterdam, and second year having galettes des rois here. I decide to have it every year to memorize my stay in Amsterdam by collecting the fève. I wrote to the owner last year, asking what the figure came from. Sébastien was very nice to reply me, saying it referred to Marcel Pagnol! This year, I got Marcel!!!🤩 Wish you good health in the new year, and long lasting...

I came in today to buy a galette des rois, the lady behind the counter was really rude and had no clue what I was talking about. She made me feel like she was annoyed that I wasn't speaking dutch, but if you work for a french bakery in a neighborhood full of french expats, you can't be surprised that not all customers are dutch. I made it very clear that I wanted one type of pie and she put the wrong one in the bag, which I only found out once home eating the pie. I would have thought that a so called french bakery would at least make sure their staff understand french words for the pastries they sell. The food is ok but really overpriced, and with rude staff serving you its not a great...

Great little french bakery in Amsterdam! Go early to avoid lines and then just enjoy! I went there early morning, 0730, to get some bread and pastry for breakfast. There was no line, although you could sense it getting busier. The choice is huge - they have breads, baguettes, pastry and beautiful cakes. You can see how the dough is being made through a big window. The service is quick and attentive. The food is extremely fresh and high quality. The prices are very decent - for sure not overpriced. We had a baguette, croissants, pain au chocolat and some madeleines. All very taste and well made. Pro tip: go early to avoid lines. They open up at 0700am, so be there and get the freshest batch!
