An Unforgettable Dining Experience at Roux, Amsterdam

My wife and I recently had the pleasure of dining at Roux in Amsterdam, and it was nothing short of extraordinary. From the moment we walked through the door, we were welcomed with warmth and professionalism, setting the tone for what would be an unforgettable evening.

The ambiance of the restaurant is intimate and stylish, with a modern, yet cozy feel. The lighting and décor create a relaxed atmosphere, ideal for a special night out.

Now, let’s talk about the food—absolutely incredible. The menu is a blend of innovative flavors and classic techniques, with each dish beautifully presented. We started with an appetizer of perfectly seared scallops, paired with delicate flavors that complemented the fresh seafood. For the main course, I opted for the duck breast, which was cooked to perfection, tender and rich with flavor. My wife chose the fish, and it was equally impressive, with a beautifully crisp exterior and flaky, tender meat inside. Every bite felt like a work of art.

The wine list was extensive and thoughtfully curated, with the sommelier offering great suggestions to pair with our dishes. Service throughout the evening was impeccable—attentive without being overbearing, and knowledgeable about both the food and wine.

What stood out most, though, was the attention to detail. It wasn’t just the quality of the food that made Roux special, but the seamless experience from start to finish. The team made us feel as though we were the only guests in the restaurant, and the entire evening was a celebration of fine dining at its best.

Roux is the perfect choice for anyone looking for a memorable meal in Amsterdam, whether it’s a romantic night out or a special celebration. We’re already looking forward to...

I recently visited Roux in Amsterdam, drawn by its high rating on Google. While it was a good restaurant, I can’t agree with its 5-star rating.

The food was definitely the highlight. The ribeye steak was cooked to perfection, and the fries with homemade mayonnaise were excellent - the mayo portion was very generous. The bread and butter was also delicious; the bread was fresh and warm, and the butter, churned with flavours like herbs and lemon, was a real standout. I was disappointed they’d run out of pâté, as I was really wanting to try it. The charcuterie board had a mix of good and not-so-good items. I think the meat I didn’t like was bresaola, but I can’t be sure as you don’t get told.

The seating arrangement was less than ideal. We were squeezed between two other tables, making it impossible to ignore the conversations around us. This setup detracts from the overall dining experience. Additionally, the service was quite slow. We often found ourselves waiting for drinks and the check, which was frustrating. On top of that, I was charged 5 euros for water, which seemed excessive (and you don’t get told about the fee for water beforehand).

On the positive side, Roux has a fantastic wine menu that pairs well with the dishes. However, the beer list is limited and could use some improvement.

Overall, I’m glad I visited Roux, but I wouldn’t return. It’s a solid 4-star restaurant, but not the 5-star gem its Google rating suggests it to be. If you’re in Amsterdam, it’s worth a visit for the food, but be prepared for some shortcomings in service...

After getting quite a few recommendations to visit this restaurant we finally managed to create time for a visit and made our reservation. From a food perspective we were not disappointed at all, enough variety of dishes which also included vegetarian options. The quality was excellent and the portions (for us at least) just right, great combination of flavors in every dish. The kitchen clearly consists of a very talented team, and we will be back if the menu will change to experience it once again. Excellent selection of wines as well to complement the dishes. Perhaps a small point of improvement would be the service, that could have been a bit better. We were served by multiple people, however with different experiences (some were quite a bit better and more engaging then others). Sometimes it took a while to get noticed. For a restaurant like this consistency would be expected and this would have made the experience better. But the food was the real star of the show here, simply excellent. We will be back, very much recommended if you are...

What a treat. We were running a little late but the team accommodated us, no problem. The food was fantastic. For mains I had the duck which was superb, great flavors, balance to the dish and the cooking spot on. I was so confident I had “won” dish of the day with Mrs H, that is until I tried her fish. It was amazing. Go there for this dish alone. This was all paired with a lovely wine recommended by the very friendly and knowledgeable sommelier. In fact ALL the staff were excellent. They knew exactly what they were serving, introduced each dish and their style was laid back yet attentive. We were both very impressed. If you find yourself in Amsterdam definitely make it a destination for dinner. Great job all at Roux.
