Sadly was not what I was expected. It might be obvious for others but it. Wasn't obvious to me, that the pancake boat is catered to children. My experience looked something like this: the boat was very full - therefore it was very loud. The children's screams and laughs would have been disturbing enough if it wasn't mixed with music that sounded like it came out a children's pirate movie, which was on the whole time. The pancakes on the other hand were delicious! Sadly I thought there system was were bad though. There is a small wall where the pancakes get served. There are three options of pancakes you can get: natural, with apple and with bacon. People have to take on of them and then walk on to the Buffet of toppings next to them... That sounds like a good idea at first, but remember this is on a boat, with a ton of people including children. So obviously there will be a long line of people waiting until the kind of pancake they want is done, right next to the waiting queue others are trying to chose their toppings, and all of that in a small space... On a boat. So that didn't make up for a fun or nice experience. I personally also did not like the buffet with the toppings. As I had no idea what could possibly fit well together on a pancake. Service for drinks was very slow, we were able to order drinks once after almost an hour (all 0,2l as common in the nl) after that was no time anymore to order a second time. Something positive to still mention is that personal was very friendly, and the seats were comfortable. So all in all: I did not have a good experience at the pancake boat, it was delicious but too loud, chaotic and irritating. I didn't even get to really enjoy the view from the boat, as I was either standing in line, being distracted by children waiting in line and the food. So if you are planning to go there with children you will probably have a chaotic but very fun time (there even is a ballbath). But if you go as adults only, I can either recommend trying to find a time and date when the boat is not so full, or frankly not...
Read moreGreat combination of sightseeing, tasty food and friendly staff. Beware of the children, though! We went there on their last cruise of the day (17:45/5:45 pm) without reservation. Arrived there about 20 mins before departure and didn't have to do any waiting. The friendly staff showed us our table and shortly after the cruise began and they finished a little introductory speech, the first pancakes where free to eat. It was a good thing the staff "invited" each table individually to start the feast because that way there was no traffic jam at the buffet. The pancakes (3 kinds: plain, with apple, with bacon) where each on a single plate and we had to stand up, get them from the cupboard and then proceed to the buffet where the toppings (cheese, sausage, ham, chocolate, smarties, yams, cinnamon, lots of other sweet and savoury stuff) had to be chosen. The ship was not completely full and the kitchen did their best to cover our needs but sometimes people had to wait, especially the plain ones where in great demand (couldn't really understand why, the bacon and apple ones where delicious). A dedicated eater like me can still manage to eat 5 to 6 of them. Very satisfying. The drinks include the standards but the prices where rather high (4,5€ for a 0,5l beer). But considering the very fair price for the cruise and the food, we happily paid the beer. Also, other places around town aren't much cheaper anyways. The only downsides lie in the nature of the whole thing: the buffet tends to be crowded. Also, the lower deck includes a ball pit which is great for children but rather annoying for non-children. Also, there was no explanation as to what we were seeing outside the window, so don't expect a proper guided sightseeing tour. You're gonna be busy eating anyway ;) To sum it up: nice cruise, nice staff, tasty food. The noisy environment and the waiting are made up for by the great price. If you have children, I'd say it's...
Read moreI love this event so much that upon every visit, I book my family tickets for the AYCE pancake cruise.there are some cool places to take great pictures. To start, the neighborhood that the boat is docked at is very unique and I would recommend you take the ferry over early to check out the graffiti painted container pods and take some cool pictures. Upon entering the cruise boat, you give the reservation info to person at the register if you did not pay online. They then escort you to your assigned table where there are pancake syrups and decorations and a few advertisements. Once everyone is aboard, they will explain in both English and Dutch the information about how the cruise works. I think this time, we were the only Americans aboard. The host was super friendly and he even let us go first to the pancake window to get out plates. There are 3 types of pancakes: plain, baked in bacon slices, and baked in apple slices. Concept of plain/sweet/savory. The toppings for the sweet option are insane. Think "kid in a candy store"! Everything from shaved chocolate to cherry jam. The savory section has wonderful brie cheese and salami or ham. So good, we just kept eating. After our bellies were full, we were invited to visit the captain upstairs. He was such a nice gentleman and seemed to really enjoy his job. There is a basement ball pit for the youngins to enjoy and burn off some of the sugar intake from the pancake toppings. For the adults, they have a small bar menu with very delicious warm cider wine. I highly recommend you purchase a cup. The cruise lasts about 75 minutes and there are very interesting sights along the way. The cruise is not narrated but the host will certainly tell you where you are and answer any questions you might have. Be sure to make your reservation and take the whole...
