Nice looking restaurant, we sat just outside under the awning. Nice decor inside and pleasant location on Kleine Berg watching people go by.
Food was OK but a bit disappointing on the whole. We had the social dining menu with optional middle course. Some dishes were really nice, for eg. the Umami Duck, Vinai Beef and Panko Scallops. I would recommend those. The Truffle Halibut was lovely and buttery soft too, but I could not really taste any truffle. However, some other dishes were a real let down, for eg. the Wild Hog, the Crispy Crabby and the Quail - many of which cost extra to order. I must say the presentation was very good - when the plates were set down on the table I could not wait to try them but unfortunately some dishes were under seasoned and little sauces and extra elements on the plate were a bit tasteless and many of the dishes simply lacked a bit of acidity or something fresh to lift them up. Given the generally amazing presentation, I felt that the taste could have been better.
The service was pretty bad. The host would not take our drinks order. The restaurant was not busy at all and it would have taken 5 seconds to just take our order. Instead, he insisted on calling our waitress, who was sweet but not very attentive. We were seated for more than 20 minutes before we got our first drink (Mojitos, which were very good).
Later on, we got a new waitress, but no explanation as to what happened to our first one. The new one was quite patronising when we asked for some salt (the softshell crab was under seasoned and needed salt). Her comment was, with raised eyebrow, "Really?" and "I won't tell the chef". Maybe the chef would like some feedback that some dishes were under seasoned, unless his ego is so big that he cannot accept constructive criticism. My wife and I are foodies and eat out regularly at good restaurants, so I believe our palettes to be sophisticated enough not to be second guessed and questioned by our waitress. Besides, it's just plain rude to condescend to your customers.
Would I go back? I don't think so. Mainly because of the indifferent service and because the food wasn't quite up to expectations. I was treated to dinner by my wife on this occasion and the bill was not insignificant. I felt bad that she spent such a considerable amount of her hard-earned money on what was supposed to be a truly special night out, and that we did not really have...
Read moreI used to come frequently before Covid, and the place is always a vibe! Beautiful decor and a nice experience of flavors.
Although, during the current circumstances with shortage of staff, and new staff still learning, an mistake was made with our order and our course was accidentally delivered to another table, and unfortunately had to wait 45 minutes for each course. Heidi, a sweetheart of a person and a very quick and resourceful thinker, solved the problem for us in no time! Heidi is super sweet and proactive, and made sure to always check on us ever since, and she also offered us a drink for compensation for the long wait. I got my favorite drink which was the signature cocktail called Umami, it’s super delicious and absolutely stunning to look at! The dishes varied in my opinion in tastiness but in overall very recommendable! My favorites were their new veggie gyozas, which was in my opinion a very unique, novel and wonderful take on the traditional gyozas, but still reminiscent of the authentic flavors! I’d absolutely recommend these. Another one of my favorite is the Shang hai PakSoy for the perfection in execution and perfect harmony in flavors!
In overall, I really think Umami is worth stopping by if you’re interested in experiencing new flavor combinations and getting inspired in a beautiful interior! Thanks again Heidi! You’re an absolute...
