Mica Coffee Bar — Restaurant in Haarlem

The banana bread is A++, coffee is a 8.5/10, and the barista was friendly.

The major downside is the cafe's "no laptop policy". I generally wouldn't be bothered but I came in to do a bit of writing on my dissertation 😅. So, laptop required... I don't know if there was a sign about the policy that I didn't see but if I had seen it I would have gone to another place. Due to the policy (and dissertation pressure!) I had to drink my coffee and eat my bread quickly so I could move to a new place to work. I'd understand if the place was busy and I was taking space staying for hours. But that wasn't the case. So, I was a bit surprised. It felt weird to have my cafe experience dictated.

Other than that, the music was nice and it'd have been a perfect place to do some...

Quite enjoyed going to Mica until I got told off for using my iPad! I was 1 of 2 or 1 of 1 customers inside at the time (ie it was rather quiet) and I was asked to not use my 'laptop' (actually an iPad) as they have a "no laptop policy". Sadly that was the last time I went there (which is many months ago now).

I might understand if the place was packed and people were queuing to sit down whilst I selfishly occupy a table and 'rob' Mica of potential business... But I was literally the only paying customer in there at the time - and I'm always self conscious about sitting somewhere for any amount of time without at least buying something to warrant my taking up space... Delicious, always pretty friendly. Expensive but high quality food and coffee. They don’t allow laptops, which I find rather pretentious and silly — if we write on a notepad it’s okay but not laptops? Guess they want a particular vibe. Seems it would make more sense to have one table designated for laptops, or a limit for how long you can be there with a computer. I’m a writer and often work in cafes. I order multiple cappuccinos over the two or so hours I’m there, and usually food. A person working for 2 hours with one coffee is the same as a person sitting with friends for 2 hours with one coffee. Guess we ruin the aesthetic. Phones are fine though. Lol. Still,...
