Hortus Grand Café — Restaurant in Leiden

Lunchroom in the glasshouse attached to the most beautiful garden of Leiden. Nice transparent atmosphere and peaceful terrace. They serve a local menu with many vegetarian options. Staff is not always professional or excelling in communication. I booked a table online for drinks and got a 2-hours time slot. When I got there they said I could only sit there for 1,5 hours since they had to reserve the space for another occasion. If I would’ve known that in advance I would’ve gone to another place, now with changing to another table (which was not possible) it broke the vibes and in the end we just went home. They could have taken the trouble to put a note in my online booking that my reservation had been shortened so I could have decided in time for myself to go somewhere else. Beautiful place for coffee and cake or lunch in Leiden! The atmosphere is relaxed and so pretty with all the greenery inside.

We stumbled upon this little gem while exploring the city. It is situated in a glass greenhouse in the hortus botanical garden. We had the 'mini high tea' for 8.5 per person. It included drinks: any coffee, tea, cuppacino ect. With a lovely fresh orange juice and a jug of water. This was served with a tasting platter of 4 cakes. A tip for the restaurant: Next time, during a special day (today monument day) when you expect a lot of reservations and people. It might be a good idea to hire more chef's to help in the kitchen. Unfortunately today we waited 75 minutes for our lunch. Besides that I hoped for a filling meal salad.
