CRIMINALLY GOOD FOOD IN POPULAIR BUT RATHER NOISY RESTAURANT

Even on a dreary wednesday night at 7.15 pm Verboden Toegang seemed almost booked out. As popular now as back in the '80s and '90s of the last century when we regularly dined here.

The reserved table was near a large and noisy group. The acoustics in the old building are not great, so we asked for another table in a quieter part of the restaurant. Granted by the staff without any problems.

The food was indeed "criminally delicious"! The main course Top Crimineel (steak) was exactly right and the dessert Brandgevaar was delicious. The rest of the menu also looked good, as well as dishes on their way to other tables.

I am one of those people who will read the menu before they go to a restaurant. Looking at the titles of the dishes, I softly sighed. They are all a tongue-in-cheek reference to the restaurant’s name, and you could call it slightly corny. However! Reading the dishes immediately peaked my interest. Interesting and accomplished flavour combinations but not at the cost of great tasting plates, so it turned out tonight. We chose some kind of tasting menu and all dishes were just excellent. Wines were very good too. All not overly expensive. The service was highly professional and friendly, the atmosphere informal and lively. It was completely packed but it didn’t get in the way of timeliness of the courses and attention of the staff....

A reasonably short but varied menu with a selection of cold and warm starters, fish, meat and vegetarian dishes. The dishes are well presented without being pretentious. Starter had a combination of good flavours even though it had too much cream to crispy pastry ratio. Meat stew with brown beer was rich and flavoursome. The dessert was on par for the Netherlands. A combination of white chocolate crème brûlée and passion fruit ice cream. While both tasted alright, they was nothing binding them together. In fact they were presented in seperate receptacles.
