Le Malle Jan — Restaurant in Leiden

Having visited Malle Jan on several previous occasions with good impressions, we were quite disappointed with the service yesterday. Waiters seemed very young and inexperienced, and did not know what ingredients the dishes contained. One in our party was vegan and one had allergies. However, even after being informed of this, food was brought visibly containing the allergen in question! Fortunately this was caught in time! The waiters also missed our order of wine with the main course, and this only arrived after most of us had already finished the course. The "Paris" group menu has vegan options for the starter and main, but the restaurant could not offer a dessert for our vegan. This is more or less implied by the other courses having vegan options. The scores in the Food and Service categories are both one star higher than deserved by yesterday's performance based on previous better experiences. The kitchen staff obviously know what they are doing, and the quality of the food is generally good. It is possible that you will still enjoy this establishment if in a small group without dietary restrictions. But given the struggling waiting staff yesterday, I would not recommend going here with a group with any persons with dietary concerns, as these require basic knowledge on behalf of the waiters and clear communication between waiters and...

What a disappointment. We were looking forward to this meal however the delays from the kitchen were unacceptable and dominated our experience. Eventually it was just shy of 2 and a half hours for 2 courses. We appreciate slow dining where the experience is not rushed and can be enjoyed at the end of a busy day in a nice environment but there is a point where you have to say 'what the he** is going on'. We arrived at 7:30pm for our booking and were seated in the georgous courtyard area and immediately ordered our drinks and ordered our entree and mains around 10 minutes later. The food was simple and OK when it eventually came but a 45 minute wait for entrees (8:24pm) of oysters and escargo and additional 50 minute delay for the main meal (9:13pm) of 2x steak frites made the focus the delivery and not the food. The Malle Jan used to be one of my dad's favorites and my family and I had dinner there in the past often. So i decided to have dinner last night there again with my daughter. We were received by a friendly waiter and the atmosphere of the restaurant was still cozy and nice as I remembered it from years past. However ,although the service was friendly, it was rather on the slow side bordering on being unattentive..... The food quality was ok but not as good as it used to be. Example: Had an onion soup with almost no onions in it. The Dover Sole had a beautiful size but was a bit overcooked and greasy.The Tarte Tatin resembled more of apple pudding than what a Tarte Tatin should be. I did have a special dietary request which was properly met by the kitchen. Would i come back? Yes but i sincerely hope that some adjustments in kitchen and service...
