Surakarta Restaurant — Restaurant in Leiden

Nice atmosphere created in the space, but the prices are too high for the food you're getting. Vegetarian/vegan option was unimaginative and bland with little variety in veggies and 8 miniscule pieces of tofu. The peanut sauce was almost the same as the one that came with the main dish, mainly consisting of a lot of sweet soy sauce, garlic and some pepper. The spices were submerged in the sweetness. Finished everything because I just hate throwing away food. Food was as good as cold when it arrived.

Were there on a fairly busy night, so might explain the cold food. No space to get to your table by moving the chairs if the table in front of you or behind you is sitting down, lavishly or not.

Vegans, Vegetarians and Allergy concerned!! Warning!!! Ask about EVERYTHING since nothing is indicated on the menu whatsoever. The vegetarian option in Dutch doesn't say that there's fish or oyster sauce in the dish, while the English one does. Waiters defence for that was that some guests "don't mind eating fish", doesn't mean other people don't either or it classifies as vegetarian.

As mentioned before, the quality of the veg-food is of a low standard compared to what is possible for the same or lower price. The sambal tasted like something that could have anchovies in it so be careful with that too.

What a disappointment! We went to Hillegom to have dinner at an Indonesian restaurant but it was closed. We called the Surakarta Restaurant before 8pm, booked a table and went to Leiden. We parked, arrived at the restaurant before 9pm and the ladies (who had an empty restaurant) said they no longer served food.

We explained that we had a reservation. They said they didn't know anything, that it must be a mistake, maybe we had called another restaurant. We show the cell phone with the last call a few minutes ago. They ignored it. We complained saying that it was said on the internet that it closed at 10pm and it was still 9pm. Delicious food but slow service! We had a great time celebrating a birthday at this restaurant, we ordered multiple combo menus and got to try many small delicious dishes.

Sadly it just took a long time for it to be served, over 40 minutes! And since I know most Indonesian restaurants cook their dishes in batches (as the portions are so small) I had a hard time to understand why it took so long. I do have to say that the staff was very friendly!
