We had an enjoyable stay at De Vier Seizionen (Four Seasons - also the number of rooms) but you need to know what it is and what it isn’t before you book. So, what is it? It’s a clean, quiet, and quaint lodging in a (somewhat) modernized traditional Dutch building in the charming little town of Lisse. The staff and manager, who also run the (very good) restaurant that constitutes the bottom level of the building, are friendly, efficient and helpful. We arrived early for check-in and the manager graciously allowed us to occupy the room immediately – always appreciated after a transatlantic fight! Lisse is a delightful Dutch village away from the tourist crush of Amsterdam, and the B&B is a short walk or even shorter drive to the Keukenhof Gardens. The optional breakfast was delivered to your room every morning and was just outstanding in its variety and quality.||So, what is it not? It is not a large, traditional B&B with space and amenities for an extended stay. The rooms are small, even by European standards, and in our room, there was only one tiny closet and no drawers to store clothes. So, you basically live out of your suitcase, sitting on the floor, for the duration of your stay. While the room had modern touches such as good Wi-Fi, flat screen TV and a nice bathroom, the lighting was horrible in the bathroom and the only place to sit other than the bed were two hardback table chairs. Unlike most traditional B&Bs, there was no common area to lounge away from your room other than an open-air veranda that didn’t look very comfortable either and, of course, was subject to the weather. Finally, there were some steep steps to get to all the rooms, which might be an issue for mobility-challenged guests.||Bottom line: we enjoyed our stay very much, and we recommend this B&B heartily. But it is better for a short stay than a longer one. We stayed for 3 days which was tolerable, but I wouldn’t have wanted to stay too much longer. I imagine most people stop here for just a night or two to take advantage of its proximity to Keukenhof. (Getting to the gardens early is critical these days to avoid the crush of people during the tulip season, so I heartily recommend this strategy.) This is the best lodging option in or near Lisse, and it books up early for tulip season, so bear that in mind and reserve well ahead. You will...
