Confectionery-Chocolaterie Looijenga B.V. — Restaurant in Nijmegen

Although this is one of the highest rated and recommended bakkerij at Nijmegen, I did not have the best experience.

I went there because many blog posts were recommending this bakkerij and that i could find the famous Marikenbrood that’s a Nijmegen specialty.

My initial disappointment was that they did not have it fresh. They sell it frozen. Ready to take home and get it prepared there, for me that was a bit odd, but it seems that other bakkerijen do the same. Main issue for me is that if you are traveling or vacationing you don’t have a place to warm it.

Since I walked all the way there from the city center, I wasn’t going to leave empty handed, so I asked for a recommendation from the person that was currently there.

Her advice was to take a hazelnut pastry called “Louise”, the flavor was Vanille. I’m not a food reviewer or critic, but for me it was too much. It was hard to eat (too tall) and had a lot going on. It was a mix of a macaroon, with merengue and other stuff, maybe also too sweet. Really not my favorite.

I’m not rating lower because my experience was not the best, and the dislike of the recommended pastry is a personal taste. Other people might like it.

Onze bruidstaart op tijd besteld inclusief onze wens voor een bruidspaartje op de taart. Een dag voor ons huwelijk kregen we een mail waarin werd vermeld dat gewenst bruidspaartje niet geleverd kon worden. Leek ons een beetje laat om dan nog te bestellen, maar goed. We kregen de keuze uit twee andere bruidspaartjes. Duidelijk beschreven welke we dan graag zouden willen. Kregen we uiteindelijk toch het verkeerde paartje op de bruidstaart. Uiteindelijk wel geruild tot het uitgekozen paartje, maar toch jammer, want die staat dus niet op de foto op onze dag. Juist daarin kun je dan het verschil maken, lees de mail met wensen goed en ben daar dan wat meer secuurder in. En biedt dan op z’n minst even een excuses aan, maar helaas. Misschien kleinigheidjes, maar je betaald toch een hoop geld en dan wil je het op zo’n dag toch graag zoals afgesproken. De kok van de locatie heeft de taart ook nog teruggestuurd omdat de munt verlept zou zijn en de chocolade zijkant al kapot was. Ze wilden de taart in eerste instantie niet mee terug nemen omdat er geen bakker meer aanwezig zou zijn, maar de kok was resoluut en de taart ging terug. Uiteindelijk is het keurig opgelost en hebben wij er op onze dag niets van gemerkt, maar het is toch jammer om dit achteraf te horen. De taart was overigens echt verrukkelijk! Very delicious ice cream. Creative home made kinds of taste. I loved the cheesecake, citrus and rosemary ice cream. Never ate an ice cream with rosemary before... Delicious. With the prices of ice cream having risen so much in the last 20 years I can't afford as much ice cream as I'd like anymore. Luijenga had a social deal running and I got 10 balls of ice cream for half the normal price....
