I came here to have dinner with a lot of hype and, to be honest, I fell a bit disappointed. Before describing the courses, two general remarks: 1. In a restaurant called 'De Matrooss', I would expect some fish in the menu, and the only fish I ate were two mini-prawns in one of the dishes. And 2. If I order a 4 courses menu, I would not expect two cold starters in it. I would have prefered more "substance" like a main course of meat and a main course of fish, but not two starters. First course was a chucrut deconstruction. It was my favourite but nothing really spectacular. Second course was like a kind of Spanish gazpacho deconstruction, with different kind of tomatoes, cucumber and a goat cheese that did not mix at all. Main course was meat. They told us that it was sirloin but it was not sirloin at all. The meat was chewy and really difficult to eat. I really like rare meat, but this was imposible to bite. The dessert was cocoa with a cherry whiskied icecream. For me, that I do not like whisky, it tasted too much to it. It was not a bad dessert but, again, nothing really spectacular. Service was aphatic and reluctant, like if they were just looking forward to go home. Price was 165€ for three people. Overprized. I do not put 1 star because there were a few good things and drinks were good, but what a disappointment...

Dining at Matroos en het Meisje is a quietly joyful experience. The set menu changes with the seasons, offering classic, well-executed dishes that show solid technique and a strong sense of flavor. The food isn't too flashy, it's simply good: honest cooking that’s clearly done with care. The value is also worth noting: for the quality and number of courses, the price feels more than fair. You walk away satisfied in both taste and cost. What we really liked about the place though is the atmosphere. The place has an edgy, rebellious spirit, not in the food, but in the tone, the decor, the playlist, and the attitude. It’s relaxed, a little raw around the edges, and refreshingly unpretentious. It was difficult to try to not sing along to songs while eating. The wine list is generous and exciting, with plenty of interesting options and a pleasantly low markup. It invites curiosity without pressure, which suits the overall vibe perfectly. Matroos en het Meisje is for people who love quality food but don’t need white tablecloths to enjoy it (metaphorically speaking, of course since they do use white tablecloth) It’s confident, relaxed, and quietly refreshing.

Had a 5 course meal with half glass wine pairings here. The white wines for the fish courses were just perfect! The red wines for the meat were also well paired. The absolute stunner was the dessert wine, which I thought would be too sweet, but turned out to be mild and very refreshing on a warm evening. Despite being a picky eater on surprise menus, I enjoyed every course that the chef had prepared. They were very experimental yet familiar to what I love eating. Just one dish had a slow cooked yolk, which I didn’t enjoy as much but that’s more of a preference of yolk than the execution of the dish. Would definitely recommend this place for a nice meal and especially to celebrate special occasions because the ambience and service just elevate the experience all together!

Heel erg teleurgesteld...
