Wittevrouen is going to be our neighborhood, my wife is Japanese, I often get to eat delicious Japanese food at home. I told the truth: the Nasu-don was the best I ever had and my wife agreed. It took courage to admit that, but this is the place to come have authentic Japanese food that is not ramen or sushi. I highly recommend it.
We have since been back many times, and every time it was better. Perhaps it is appropriate to call it Kaizen, perhaps it is not, I usually don't get lucky with foreign words. This time I was impressed with the expanded drink selection. The sake and soda went down really well.
I jokingly suggested they add some microbrewery beers, on second thought, there are delicious beers in Japan that perhaps can be imported. I remember a red rice beer that reached 6.5% and that was quite tasty. It might take Wittevrouwen by storm!
My, oh my! Last night we went back and they had one red rice beer waiting for me. Inside I was in tears. How thoughtful could they be? But it is a true Japanese trait to be thoughtful and considerate. But also consider how true the experience felt! You owe it to yourself to try Shokudo. I think that the food is becoming better, if that is even possible, because you can taste the love and care with which it is prepared. The apetizers or side dishes should not be ignored either. Thank you!! I highly...
Read moreWe ordered a takoyaki for starter, a donburi with white fish (osakana nanban don) on recommendation of the waiter and a katsu curry. The fish of the osakana nanban don and the rice tasted like nothing, no seasoning whatsoever. The vegetables had some sauce on it and was the only part of the dish that had some flavor, and to be honest, the flavor wasn’t so nice. I made a complaint about the lack of flavor to the staff, and all they wanted to do was give me some soy sauce to give the dish more flavor. They didn’t want me to change the dish. The waiter said the dish always tastes like this, so it wasn’t a one time mistake of the chef.
The takoyaki wasn’t so special, the flavor was nice, but the octopus inside was a bit chewy.
The katsu curry was okay, some of the meat was a bit dry and the flavor was a bit bland. Can find much better curry’s elsewhere.
The home made cold green tea isn’t a sweet ice tea, it doesn’t contain sugar.
The staff was friendly but the service was really bad. Really disappointed since the reviews...

Honestly, this is the best food we’ve eaten in Utrecht. The quality of food is exceptional, the flavours were heavenly, and the staff are super lovely!
We ordered a mixture of dishes; it was my first time trying Takoyaki balls, and I was not disappointed! Utterly delicious. My favourite dish was the Katsu don, the sweet onions and egg were very scrumptious. Finishing on a sweet note with Taiyaki was absolutely perfect, crisp on the outside and soft, sweet on the inside. Myself, my partner and two kids were very full after so much delicious food. Worth every penny!
The takeaway took 35 minutes to arrive, 8 minutes sooner than anticipated! The staff wrote a very lovely note on the bag too.
Highly recommend! And will not hesitate to eat here again...
