Bamboo Kitchen — Restaurant in Ōrākei

For a takeaway style restaurant, their food and service is solid. They're not stingy on ingredients either, a lot of places usually get stingy with meat and more expensive ingredients, while just giving you a lot of rice or noodles, with some cheap veges and a little meat. This place has a very generous balance between the three, and isn't too expensive either.

When Denizen listed this little takeaway joint amongst the best Chinese food in Auckland I decided to give it another try. But unfortunately I found it as mediocre as always. The spring roll was perfect, crispy and oily and tasty. But the vegetarian steamed dumplings had barely any filling and no flavour. The HK chicken chow main was a generous portion for the $20 price and was full of large bits of veggies, a pleasant surprise. Had chicken fried rice, sweet and sour pork, Thai sauce chicken and wontons. Wontons were excellent, chicken fried rice was good though a smallish portion, Thai sauce chicken was average and the sweet and sour pork was dry, overcooked and chewy and generally unpleasant. Sweet and sour sauce was gluggy and gloopy and there wasn't anywhere near enough of it for the dry pork.
