Cobb & Co. Whakatane — Restaurant in Bay of Plenty

Wednesday 12th March 2025 at about 7.40pm we were welcomed by a lovely lady Ruby that evening. We had a reservation for 4 adults our hosts Marchel and Ruby working that night the atmosphere in the diner was warm and welcoming. Marches gave us time to check out the menu returning 10mins later to see if we were ready to order. His service was excellent as was Rubys for our starters we had Classic Fries Weka Wings & Garlic bread the food was presented so well especially the sauces that come with each starter making these dishes so delicious. For mains 2x slow roasted pork belly ordered by my son and partner. My partner’s roast & crackle was cooked to perfection. However my son’s pork belly dish was way overcooked the meat was making the meat and crackle tough and dry. I ordered the Prawn and Parmesan Scotch fillet my steak cooked to medium rare as I asked the dish was perfect meat and prawns so soft the sauce so creamy perfectly seasoned and just melted in my mouth. My g daughter ordered the Angus Sirloin steak with salad chips & garlic buttered prawns asked my daughter how her meal was saying it was perfectly cooked. We did not have desserts as we were so full. I will be back here again and this time if any of my whanau do order pork belly to let the staff know not to overcook it. If you are gluten free for medical reasons, please be careful about eating here. I have been ill all day after requesting and eating a gf meal last night. I phoned to see if possibly I had been given a gluten meal, but I was not impressed with the person who answered. I want to make it very clear, that I am NOT sure whether my health is due to the meal I had there, but I am angry and sad at the reaction I got from the person who answered the phone when I enquired about it. We have eaten here a few times with family, and usually they do make a mistake or 2 with 7 orders, nothing major, and we usually laugh about it, but gf can be a serious medical problem. The person who answered my phone call should be sent to a hospitality course to up her service standards. She also admitted to me that although they have gf fish and chips on their menu, they cannot provide them in whakatane (only). I suggested they crossed it off their menu.... Not a good response. Cobb and Co main office get on to this please! Sorry about this rant, but It is so important for serious gluten free allergy sufferers. As I said, I do not know if their food is responsible for my health today, but I am upset by the uncaring person who answered my enquiry. Do not recommend. Not sure if they have new owners or management but was disappointed with both of Our meals. Ordered the burger and chips and ribs. My Partners burger was dry, the lettuce old and soggy, burger bun tasting old and not fresh, not enjoyable whatsoever and certainly not worth $23.50 !! Believe me I am usually more then happy to spend $20-$30 on a nice burger meal but this was just NOT OK. Aswell as my ribs being so dry and only coming with chips for $34 you would think That it comes with at least a salad or coleslaw. They did not seem fresh at all !! Chewy, dry, and were plain yuck tasting old. Filled with absolute regret as soon as we ate. Also ordered garlic bread for $8 you would think it is like usual restaurant garlic bread, triangle cut bread/roll with fresh garlic etc but no it was a $2 tin foil one - but this was the only thing I somewhat enjoyed.
