10:56 9 Review tips Been to this place with a friend (a hour before kitchen was meant to close) to be told off by the co-owner, that the kitchen was closed. Not only was I embarrassed by the way management had spoken to me after addressing it as a business person myself. However tried their catering services, which was really expensive (as are the restaurants menu) but also doesn't match what their social media pictures look like vs reality! E.g pics below are meant to be at least 2x of everything, given the price and photo on the website but it's half that- on more than a few occasions. After informing them, given excuses such as it depends on how thick the bread slice is (was 1 compared to 3) hash browns (was 1 compared to 2) and the bacon was burned. I tried to communicate this feedback as the chefs seems to be good in general but the management/manager (front of house lady with red hair) was always very moody, unapproachable via Facebook some excuse except for making it right (at least try after given 3 opportunities) to make use of their services within our business even however nothing. Simply cannot afford the expense or any further ongoing complaints from our customers. Not worth the economic challenges so many businesses or everyday clients face. Very disappointing to go somewhere else... as there appears to be high staff turnover as well. Most certainly does not give the "vibe" of happy pol working there, let alone customers. More shocked at management response, so that I felt obligated to share this unpleasant experience with the public....

I ordered two Reuben burgers and asked if I could swap the brioche bun on one for anything else. The counter staff offered to do a gluten-free bun for an extra charge, (perfect for me because I am in fact gluten sensitive), which I agreed to and paid for. A short time later a staff member came back with coins saying they couldnât do the GF bun after all, when I asked why, she explained that the chef simply âdid not want toâ.
After I asked to speak to the chef, a kitchen staff member then came over and said they could switch to bread instead, which I accepted, I said the other staff member said the chef didnât want to, which she said wasnât the case â only for them to return again saying they couldnât do that either and that my only options were brioche or no bun. By this point it really felt like the kitchen just refused to be accommodating rather than there being any genuine stock or other issue.
The wait staff themselves were lovely and clearly embarrassed by the situation, apologising several times. The issue wasnât with them as they tried to help, but the issue lied with the chefâs refusal and clear lack of comms or standard practice.
If they couldnât do it from the start they should have said so and I would have just ordered something else. A very odd experience and poor practice for a venue Iâve previously liked.
Coffee was great though I must add. However Iâd expect better out of a cafe, especially since the visit cost...
Read moreThe first time I went into Mavis & Co Rototuna, I went in with my little one, and at times to multi task with carrying her and everything can be difficult (I take my hats off to all you Mums out there). I thought the service was impressive from both Chace and his team, they not only helped by grabbing an item I had dropped out of the baby bag but on leaving I brought a bag of their "The Brewlab" coffee bean and they even had time to run it out to my car. I thought that was going the extra distance for a first time customer. Their Brewlab coffee bean also was impressive as the beans were fresh and have lasted well in storage, where I have had trouble in the past with other beans from other local cafes. I like Chace meticulous process of extracting the coffee, as being a black coffee drinking a lot of the time Ive found coffee can be under or over extracted. I've been back a few times now and have gotten to know Chace well and think he also brings good banter. Thanks Chace and the team down at Mavis &...
