Royal Siam Thai Restaurant — Restaurant in Maungakiekie-Tāmaki

A regular spot for us to dine in or takeaway. The food quality is good and they are consistent. However, we had a rather strange and rude customer experience which has put us off. I placed a pick up order via Uber on my way home. By the time we got there the wait time on the app increased by 20minutes so I thought to ask if we can dine in. There were only 2 other people in the restaurant. We asked the lady at the counter if it was okay to dine in as the food was still being prepared. She went into the back to ask the ‘owner’ we heard a lot of yelling and were told no. Uber orders cannot dine in. We have to takeaway and leave. This made no sense to us as the restaurant was basically empty and the food was still being prepared. We asked the lady to check again or if we could speak with the ‘owner’. Again we heard a lot of shouting with ‘Uber’ being said multiple times and were told no, we cannot consume their food at their restaurant. While we waited for the order all we heard was yelling from the kitchen with Uber being mentioned several more times. When we finally got our food I asked for some reasoning as to why we were unable to dine in as this situation made no sense. I was told that we had to takeaway because then they would’ve had dishes to clean. Stunned by this response we left. Considering we are regulars this felt really rude and left us very confused. Its a small and congested restaurant Decor looks very aged and tacky Staff were running back and forth many times it felt such a nuisance People come in to pick up take away or delivery pick up. There isn't enough space to walk to the counter Service was average from the staff When we ordered our mains it took a good 40min to arrive and that was only 1 main The other 2 came 10min after We asked for medium hot and it was just mild in taste very disappointing We have had better elsewhere Before we went to pay There was a elderly gentleman waiting at the counter to pay his meal The staff behind the counter was on the phone that took a good 10min There was another staff member who came and helped a young lady with her take away order ,she was attended promptly and served before the elderly man That was so rude i felt so awful for the old guy Its a busy place but i sure won't...

I'm rating 1 only because of the service! It clearly looks like only a specific ethnicity of people are provided with good service. For example, no hot towels for all customers, lack of attention and no intention to offer more rice despite curry being left. Staff is absolutely not welcoming or approachable. They make you feel that you are obligated to them for having dined at their restaurant. The owner of the restaurant really needs to restructure his staff. Otherwise food is great.
