HALIFAX CAFE — Restaurant in Nelson

Very disappointed with the phone service I received when I phoned to book for my husbands birthday lunch on Saturday 29th October 2016. I did not even get a chance to sample (what I would imagine would be a really lovely menu) as the man who answered the phone was very blunt, almost rude right off the bat, maybe he was busy? I said I was ringing to book a table and asked if they took bookings, he said yes. He asked how many and I said three, his reply "we only take large bookings".......could he not have said that when I asked in the first place and was there any reason he sounded so rude? I did ask if they were busy, he said no. No real excuse for sounding like he did I thought. Obviously I decided not to come for lunch if that was the kind of service I was going to receive when it was my husbands birthday. I am a local person and have been for 37 years. I was imagining someone from out of town making that call.......I am fairly sure they would not have had a good feeling about Nelson hospitality if they phoned and got this man. I recently visited Halifax Cafe and tried their 'Halifax Big Breakfast' with 2 pieces of toast, grilled bacon, sausage, mushrooms, and eggs, with the option of fried or scrambled. The breakfast was delicious and very filling, leaving me feeling satisfied for hours. What really stood out to me was how accommodating the staff were to my preferences. As I don't like tomatoes or mushrooms, they were happy to exclude them from my meal, which I really appreciated.

To top it off, I had a chocolate and banana milkshake with cream, which was absolutely delicious and the perfect sweet treat to balance out the savory breakfast. The staff were not only accommodating but also provided a friendly and welcoming atmosphere. They had contagious smiles, and their laughter added to the overall positive experience.

I was thoroughly impressed with the quality of food and service at Halifax Cafe and will definitely be coming back with my father to share the experience. I had an unfortunate experience at this café recently. I was picking up a delivery order in the morning and decided to also purchase a hot drink. When I approached the counter, the staff member (an Indian woman) was busy preparing other delivery items, so I left my delivery bag on a nearby table and went to use the restroom.

While in the restroom area, I heard someone follow me, which I assumed might be another customer. However, upon exiting, the staff member confronted me and stated in a raised voice that the restrooms were for café customers only. I tried to explain that I intended to make a purchase, but she responded curtly and told me to report it if I wanted to, showing no concern.

I found the interaction to be unnecessarily hostile and unprofessional. I hope the management will consider providing clearer communication and customer service training to prevent situations like this in the future.
