River Kitchen Nelson — Restaurant in Nelson

Had high expectations for this place as it was recommended by our AirBnB host and had good reviews however was very disappointed! Firstly we waited over 40 minutes for our meal to come and they weren’t even that busy. The waitresses didn’t even come to check up on us even though we finished our coffee and was still waiting for our meal for 40 minutes! We mentioned it at the counter and they said they were just plating our meal. Still waited 5-10 minutes and no apology whatsoever when they brought the food to the table. We ordered 2 buttermilk fried chicken burgers, chicken and waffles and an open salmon sammy. They ran out of burger buns for one of the buttermilk chicken burgers so it was replaced with thin slices of bread. The salmon in the open salmon sammy was a little dry. The chicken in the chicken and waffles was looking burnt and tasted like it had been double fried, did not taste fresh. Used to be a regular here when I lived in Nelson. Called in for breakfast with the family this morning and everything went well until we received an extra drink (we didn't order). I order waffles with a side of bacon. Not having my glasses I didn't realize a yogurt topping was $2 extra. But I had made sure it came with maple syrup. I could detect any syrup on the waffles or plate an assume it was forgotten. The portion was very small, about 1/4 of a standard waffle size and the whole dish was dry. I was really hungry so I scoffed the lot and washed it down with the water provided. Sadly my partner and son were equally disappointed with neither enjoying or finishing their meals. Hmmm. Came here because of good reviews. Lovely setting, very busy, helpful lovely staff and the food looked good. My order came out (eggs bene with bacon) however I ordered with salmon. I explained that I was happy with bacon if I'd paid for bacon (paid before we ate, we were given the choice) but it seemed that I had been charged for salmon so they swapped it out.... A little too quick. It's possible I got someone else's order. We both left there not feeling to good for the rest of the day.
