Ombrellos Kitchen & Bar — Restaurant in South Island

Nope. The worst burger we've tried in Dunedin. I'm guessing freezer issues? This is my best guess why the burger was dry and clumpy and the ice cream was crumbly. Can't say that explains the burnt coffee though. We should have gone to Patti's & Cream like usual.

Service/communication was also bad. Made a reso for my partner's birthday 3 weeks in advance. Needed to move the time of the reso so replied to the email a week beforehand. No response. Forwarded it to the bar manager email they list on their website. No response. Called a few times. No answer. Left a voicemail. Seems like none of this got through. Then tried to order sauce on the side of a burger and were told "they won't do it, we're FAR too busy" in an impatient tone. I saw no more than 3 tables seated the whole time we were here. One party was larger (maybe 10max) but most seats were empty the whole time we were here. We ordered 2 items (1 was a coffee/affogato) so didn't feel like can I please have mayo on the side was the end of the world. Ended up just ordering the burger plain instead, specified just cheese on it, got surprise bacon. I cook professionally. 3 tables in a restaurant this size is no big deal.

This is a lovely place, an endangered species in a city where the humble bar and pub has been heading to extinction.

Really great location and set up, perfect for summer and the food was very, very nice. I enjoyed their sharing platters and the drink selection was abundant and served well.

The staff are amazing people.

I am disappointed by some 'Karen-esque' muttering about the food and service, none of which holds any true relationship to the excellent experience which is this bar that has been enjoyed by myself and my friends on so many occasions.

Maybe such unfair and unfounded negativity is a reflection of Ombrellos' convenient location to the institutions surrounding the restaurant and the apparatchik/nomenklatura office party culture? 45 minutes to scoff a burger, fix a smile, do secret santa and the head home for three hours of Netflix, chips 'n dip?

Pay them no heed!

After a bit of confusion we were shown to our table in a nice wee private room, the layout of the restaurant is really cool, and a Lil quirky. I wasn't impressed with the wait staff....the guy that took drink and meal orders sat down to take the orders, it was actually unprofessional and uncomfortable, and he was trying too hard to be funny, his humour fell flat with the whole table, other staff just looked like they didn't want to be there. Also rowdy drunk people were a bit annoying, at one point a drunk girl burst in to the room, and abruptly left again but sat outside waving thru the windows at us, thank god they didn't hang around for long. On the positive side, food was great, massive servings, get the polenta fries, pork belly from the bar menu looked amazing too, salmon was perfectly cooked, too many potatoes tho! Cheesecake was good. For all the negatives, I would definitely come back, the food is great, atmosphere...
