Onyx Cambridge — Restaurant in Waikato

We had high expectations for this restaurant, given its glowing reviews on google, but our experience was nothing short of disappointing.

Table for 2 reserved under Jacky: We arrived at 7:00 PM (03/03/25), ready for what we hoped would be a memorable evening. Little did we know, we’d be waiting until 9:30 PM—yes, two and a half hours—for our mains to arrive. During this excruciating wait, we had to repeatedly ask our waitress where our food was. The only explanation we were given was that the restaurant was "busy that night," but it felt more like we had been completely forgotten about.

To make matters worse, the staff seemed indifferent to our frustration. There was no apology for the delay, no offer of compensation, and no effort to make the situation right. For a restaurant that has so many good reviews we expected professionalism and attentiveness, but instead, we were left feeling neglected and undervalued as customers.

The food, when it finally arrived, was decent—but at that point, it was hard to enjoy anything after such a long and frustrating wait. The entire experience left a sour taste in our mouths, and we can confidently say we won’t be returning anytime soon.

Save your time and money—there are far better dining options out there that actually respect...

We four senior citizens went there last night and can remark that it was a most enjoyable evening. The menu was varied and the food was superb. I can thoroughly recommend the pork bites as an entrée and my wife had the calamari which she reported was also magnificent. Our friends chose the prime eye fillet each and remarked that it was cooked to perfection.

The restaurant was quite full yet the service was prompt, efficient and very courteous. I must complement Meery and Rocky on the warm., friendly and polite service they offered our table.

Unfortunately our main course was suddenly interrupted by our friend’s wife began to choke on a piece of steak. I hasten to add that this in no way was any reflection on the food - she had a large piece of steak stuck in her throat. A lady at the next table quickly jumped up and began first aid, managing to dislodge the offending obstacle. Lucky for us as she was a trained medic.

Ate at Onyx tonight with a large group (20) for a family birthday, we had the upstairs function room.

Overall it was a decent experience, but it was marred by a waiter with a poor attitude and attention to detail. He messed up two of the orders (wrong dish, wrong meat cooking preference) and was brusque and uninterested when the errors were pointed out, no apology was offered at all. The food itself (other than the over cooked steak resulting from the waiters error) was all delicious and well-cooked.

The restaurant was chokingly hot and apparently unable to be cooled down via the aircon system. They eventually opened the small windows at the back of the function room, which lowered the temperature to a bearable but still overly warm level.
