The best food I've had in my 9 weeks in Central America!
First off, this place is heavily populated by local customers, which I consider a very good sign.
They have an open air grill, on the sidewalk outside a house.
Menu items: A half chicken (pollo). My friends said that it was great. C$ 100 ($3). A strip of pork, seasoned a little salty and a tiny bit sour. I ordered this and it was exceptional! C$ 100. Rolled chicken tacos. These were good, and I finished mine but it was a little tough to chew. I won't order again soon but locals were buying them up. C$20 ($.60). Enchilada. This was a 8-10" folded corn tortilla which had been stuffed with a rice and beef mixture, then sealed and deep fried. It was a little on the greasy side which is probably part of why it was so yummy. C$20 ($.60).
Sides: A homemade cabbage slaw which had a light and slightly hot vinegarette dressing. I'd say that it was okay, and not a must order item, which is okay because it comes for free with an entre. I think I saw someone pay C$5 ($. 15) for it as a side to the tacos or enchiladas. Deep fried chunks of plantain. This was the softer preparation and delicious (the best I've had). It's kind of starchy and a little sweet. Crispy fried plantain chips (similar to potato chips). Very good and a hearty portion was free with either the chicken or pork entre. Deep-fried cheese. This was a local variety of cheese and I don't know what to call it. Again, this was good, and not a must have for me. I'm sure others would disagree.
Items come wrapped in banana leaves which then get stuffed into plastic bags to carry away. There are no tables.
They are only open on the weekends, for dinner. I plan to eat here pretty much every night...
Read moreAs people have noted, the portion sizes are absolutely enormous. However, I'm not sure what's going on with the prices - while other tourists report paying 3usd, I was asked to pay 6. I still think this was a reasonably fair deal.
The chicken is delicious, but beyond that the food is nothing particularly special. If you want to try some street food though, this is somewhere you can and I doubt you'll come away with regret.
Edit: I was in such a rush eating my food last night that that I forgot about this when I was writing my review. I enjoyed the meal, but it remains the fact that I had to dig out a little piece of metal from my meal, presumably off the grill. It was isolated and I didnt swallow it so there were no issues, but that could have caused a serious issue for someone and as such I can't really justify...
Read moreThis pop-up restaurant only appears in the evenings for dinner (but I also got a late lunch on a Sunday I think), but you can't miss it because of the crowd of locals. Both the chicken Frito and the chicken tacos (which seem identical to Mexican flautas to me) are fantastic. The frito is a bed of plantain chips inside a banana leaf pouch, with the meat and fried bananas on top. The pork (cerdo) was excellently seasoned but a bit tough. I recommend the chicken, which was C$150.
On the day I got lunch, they had several other meat options in sauce and lasagna. The jalapeño pork and the lasagna were most popular with the locals. I got fried pork with gallo pinto, salad, and fried bananas for C$100. Fantastic value and it...
