We were visiting Babbo on Saturday at around 10 in the morning, 4 adults and 3 kids. The place was almost empty, so we were quickly seated by friendly waitress, who put two tables together. So far so good. Than a British speaking manager arrived to take our order. We ordered hot chocolate, coffees and pastry for all of us, and at the end of the order he said “so Pastry only!?” with judging tone and literally eyerolled.
After 10 min we got the order by the other staff that was super friendly, than after 5 min we got another visit from the manager who reminded us that due to their fast pace environment he might take one table away from us (not to mention there was still 4 tables available at that time) again with quite an attitude. We were off Corse, shocked, but politely said we can squeeze in if needed and let go of one table.
Than after another 10 our daugter just briefly cried for like 5 second and he stormed to the table again with the bill and threw it on the table and said with a rude tone “here is your bill pay at the exit”, clearly with the intention to kick us out as soon as possible…
I was at Cafe Liebling many times before they became Baboo, and I must say I have never experienced this kind of rude attitude in a cafe in Oslo before.
So clearly the msg we got from the place was: Customers that come only for coffe and pastry are not welcome and have no place there Customers with kids are definetelly not welcome and have no place there.
I feel sorry for the chefs that make great food and other stuff that were super nice and friendly, just so that one person can ruin the experience by acting so aggressive towards paying customers! I do not wish anyone to experience this kind of attitude, so I recommend to avoid this place in a...
Read moreCouple, both around 30, looking for an informal but nice place to eat and have a glass of wine on a Saturday.
Atmosphere: The place consist of a fairly large open room with a kitchen island in the middle. The vibe is informal and seem to invite you to a glass of wine. The music is loud and mostly consisted of pop from 70-90's.
Wine/drinks: Among the two of us, we had 3 drinks (around 150 NOK/drink) and 5 different glasses of wine (100-130 NOK/glass). The wine are all natural and we always got two wines to taste before deciding. They seemed to lean towards Eastern European wines, who do make great and interesting wines in the genre.
Food: We had the 7 course tasting menu. 5 were vegetarian, one with scallops and a desert. All tasted great and were generally balanced and made with good ingredients. The bread/butter served on the side was 10/10. If you expect a big ol' steak with French red wine, then you should probably eat elsewhere and come here for wine and snacks afterwards.
Service: Everyone matched the open, informal and friendly vibe of the place. They chatted more than in most places, but never overstayed their welcome. Checked in on the when we wanted the dishes, kept us filled up on bread, water and wine.
Conclusion: This is an amazing place to drink wine and eat...
Read moreUpdated review: I’ve been back several times and really feel the need to update my review. This place has not been able to live up to former standards. I mentioned that it was a bit chaotic before, but it has gotten much worse.
There are huge lines both inside and outside the cafe, making it impossible to walk around or sit comfortably. The waiters seem desperate and very tired, resulting in an unpleasant welcome. You feel that you are in the way entering this place.
Food is still nice, but you need to wait a long time (!) to get anything. I was there this weekend and we waited a good 40 min from we arrived until we managed to eat a pastry.
I believe this place has a potential to be great, but it needs run through of rutines.
Old review: The food is great ! Love their vibe and attitude towards great quality and simplistic serving. You can never go wrong with amazing bread and salty butter. A little piece of Copenhagen in Oslo.
The problem is that it’s a little bit of a chaos - took more than an hour to just get a small lunch selection. Also had to ask for menus, ask to please order etc. Do test this place, but expect to wait for a long time and to work for the attention of the waiters. But, would say it’s worth it (but maybe don’t go on...
