Ubhar Restaurant is a gem for anyone seeking an authentic Omani culinary journey. From the moment we stepped in, the traditional Omani interior design transported us to the heart of Omani culture, creating a warm and inviting ambiance.
We started our meal with the Muttrah Paplou, a flavorful and aromatic dish that set the tone for the evening. The Seeniyat Al Wali was a delightful surprise, perfectly cooked and seasoned with traditional spices. The Qabuli Shuwaa and Chicken Makbous were equally impressive, offering a wholesome taste of Omani cuisine with just the right balance of flavors. To complement the meal, we tried the Ubhar Bellini, a refreshing drink that added a modern twist to the traditional dining experience.
What truly made our evening exceptional was the outstanding service. Sajith was incredibly helpful, guiding us through the menu and recommending their signature dishes. His attentiveness made ordering a breeze. Tazmeen, on the other hand, went above and beyond. Not only did he explain each dish in detail as he served it, but he also ensured our comfort throughout the evening. His kindness extended to helping us book a cab back to our hotel, which was a thoughtful touch.

Read moreMy friend was generously fawning about how good the place is. As we were four, so we ordered the Waleema which means feast in Arabic. A large assortment of their signature starters, mains and dessert. Everyone raved about the shiwa, but that I believe can only be truly delicious when done traditionally at a feast, not in a kitchen, much like the Hawaiian Kalua. I loved their mushroom and nuts salad and the potato croquette from the starters was with delicate flavours. As for the mains the top tastes were the Camel Biryani and the well made Harees, everything else is quite forgettable.
The fish was memorable, for me, for all the wrong reasons. For a seaside capital city, it was more suited as a dish served on an airplane or in a mall. A non-entity "white fish" in supposed Omani spices with a somewhat cream sauce 🤦🏻♀️.
I'm glad the halwa stuffed puff pastry was part of the dessert as it was the best on the plate. The ice-cream was high street vanilla with a sprinkle of frankincense. At least make an effort to create or even order a signature flavour made for you, the concept is beautiful.
Service was... thought provoking, because rather than say I'll go find out, some staff will give you whatever answer they "know" to be true.
Overall, a bit disappointing, maybe because it was hyped up for me. This was not a little food stand that I'd encourage with boosts of positivity, this is a restaurant that quite a few people love and I was only...
Read moreCame to this restaurant with high hopes of trying good quality traditional Omani cuisine but left feeling pretty disappointed and unsatisfied. Much to our chagrin, many of their signature dishes such as the camel biryani and the tuna steak were unavailable as they had “run out” and it was a “busy period”; even their basic side dishes containing sweet potatoes were unavailable!
Wounded but not broken I decided to remain at the restaurant and ordered a few dishes including an off-the-menu seafood platter recommended by the waiter (WHICH I ABSOLUTELY DO NOT RECOMMEND). The food was tasty however the serving sizes were way too small and not at all proportionate to the prices, which was unexpected considering the generosity of the serving sizes of other restaurants I had already been to.
Receiving the bill was the final nail in the coffin as I was shocked to see that the scant seafood platter I had ordered costed 18 OMR: more expensive than anything else on the menu, costing nearly 4 times as much as their average dish. The waiter claimed to have informed us that the platter was priced at 18 OMR, however all of us heard him say 8 OMR.
After much bickering, the manager was kind enough to compromise and charge us 10 OMR instead. All in all whilst Ubhar does serve acceptable Omani cuisine with a pleasant ambience, if you’re looking for value for money...
